I think we live in more of a materialistic world than ever before, accummulating things to make life more enjoyable but never feeling satisfied. Can we really be genuinely happy WITHOUT some form of belief or foundation in spirituality/something more than what we can see?

I'm genuinely happy because I have my health,my husband,my friends&my family&God to guide me..But I don't think people can be happy without some form of belief in a higher power or something more..They need to have something or someone to turn to whenever they need hope....

Over all I am. I am stressed out like you wouldn't believe which is diminishing my happiness quota.
My husband took a job 1600 miles awy and I have to stay here, alone, with our three children under 6 until I sell the house which could be whenever on top of the fact that I am in school full time to finish up my psych degree.
So yeah, I'm not just thrilled with every aspect of my life, but my kids are healthy, we have a roof over our head and food on the table so it's not all that bad either.

Well i wonder defines genuine happiness.I believe it is relative to the individual and something that is felt on differing levels from person to person and even day to day.I am not materialistic nor do i follow a belief but i can find happiness. Not all day every day but enough to keep well.......happy.

I am genuinely happy.I only need my husband and family to make it that way
I have some material things[nice home, car etc] but if someone gave me the options of either them or the happiness I have just now then they would go, no question.

I would still have the happiness without them

I'm Happy and i don't use or buy things i don't need. i don't believe in any god although I am Buddhist, but that is more based on what is than what isn't the highest truth is not some hidden secret but this moment, what is happening now is the truth, not the past or the future but now it is the only place we can live in afterall

As an atheist, I reject the idea that organized religion (including consumerism) can tell me what life's meaning is and what my values should be.

So yes, I am happy; but my lifestyle of voluntary simplicity is very different from the lifestyle endorsed by the folks in the aisles of Wal-mart right now.

Contentment is the key to fulfilment - not happiness, which is a temporary emotion. Apart from that, playing with my girlfriend.

I am.

I find it is not in the material things we have, but in the love we have for others and the love we receive from them. My Christian beliefs go along with this... It's basic tenet is to love God and others.
