I went to view some puppies last weekend to buy as a Christmas present. They were 9 wks old Chihuahuas and I put a deposit on one last Sunday and the breeder said would hold til Christmas for me and the pup would get its parvo shot.

I found out this friday that my puppy i picked died on Wednesday at the vet from Parvo, along with two other puppies so far. The breeder said I just need to make sure I bleach my shoes and wash my clothes I wore that day in bleach. But since it has been almost going on a week since I went to the breeder's house, am I wrong in thinking I need to disinfect EVERYTHING in my house with Bleach? Also, I'm still planning on getting a puppy from a different breeder sometime in the future, am I better off moving to a different apartment in the complex so the new puppy doesnt get Parvo or is that overkill??? I know Parvo is a deathly deathly disease I just dont know if I should wait longer even though the infected puppy was never in my home....?

Just to add: I appreciate all the answers about disinfecting the yard and all but the puppy never even got the chance to come home with me.Also, I live in an apartment complex. I've already told the apartment complex that a place i went to turned out to have parvo and prob have traces on my shoes and my truck.

Thanks everyone. I'll be disinfecting as I planned, glad I'm not crazy and that its not overkill, and the apartment complex will be replacing the carpet when I move. Can't believe all this when I just went to a breeder's house. Never got the chance to take a puppy hom. Hope everyone's careful with breeder's out there, I thought I picked a good one! DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE THE BREEDER LOSES YOUR PUPPY TOO AND DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! Thanks again for all the help!

Thank God you're going to a different breeder.

Just disinfect your home. To be safest about it, wait until the pup you do get has had a parvo shot.

I went through the same a few years ago. But I had brought the puppy home and the breeder had given the pups their first round of shots. The day after I got the pup home he got really sick so I took him to the Vet. He had Parvo. They were swabbing down the hospital before I got out of there.
I called the breeder and said I was bringing the pup back. When I got to the breeder they were putting the whole litter into the car to take them to the Vet. Don't blame the breeder. Parvo is their biggest problem, it gets around.
The Vet said I had to use bleach to disinfect the house. How do you use bleach on the carpet and furniture? The next best thing was to wait 8 months for the virus to die, yes it can live that long on the carpet or in the yard. Good thing my other two dogs had all their shots.
Eight months later I went back to the same breeder and found out all the puppies survived.
I have a wonderful Beagle from them now.

Parvo is a nasty little thing, it can live in alot of places. I would just make sure that you disinfect every surface in the apartment that the puppy will be on. Get a spray bottle and mix a small amount of bleach and water and spray it on the floors and hard surfaces (if you are really concerned, then get a deep cleaner to clean the carpet, you can rent one from the grocery store). I highly recommend going to a different breeder. If those pups died of parvo, it's not a good breeding environment and that guy could be running a puppy mill. There should be some sites you can check out for reputable breeders - do a google search. All pups shoud have their shots before they are allowed to come home with you anyway especially if you are paying a ton of money for them. I would get a guarantee (in writing) that the puppy has had a parvo shot before you bring it in if you decide to go with the same breeder. Think about going through a rescue first, there may be some better dogs out there than need a home rather than a dirty, puppy mill pup.

Disinfect everything just to be sure. You wouldn't want to put all the investments into the new puppy and not to mention, bond with the new one, and then find out you should have done your whole apartment to keep it safe.

Make sure the new puppy has all of its shots and make sure you keep him up to date and don't miss any. That can also help insure the health just in case you miss something. But, yes, I would disinfect the entire home just as a precaution. Good luck with a new breeder!

If you have had parvo in your home, use a strong bleach/water solution to kill it. Soak the yard with it -- better to kill the grass than your next dog! Be careful using it on carpets and fabrics, though. Parvo can live up to 6 months or so in your home or yard. Before you bring home another dog, be sure it has a strong immunity to parvo. You can have a veterinarian draw blood and run a titre to find out how well your prospective dog will fare in a parvo-infected environment. Adult dogs generally have a higher resistance than puppies do, but they need to be kept current on their vaccines. If in doubt, have your vet do the titre.

Get alot of clorox and mop and spray everyday. And b-4 u get another dog make sure u take it to the vet before bringing it home it will take yrs. to get in completly out of ur house and yard. Older dogs can get the parvo virus but it acts like a stomach virus and usually will not die from it. But be careful anywhay

parvo is deadly but believe me your puppy will be exposed to it when you take it places... make sure your puppy has his vaccines,,, the parvo is not everywhere... it will be on what you had on that day....so wash your clothes.... take a shower and you are good to go... vets have parvo in their clinics all the time and they still feel safe letting clients bring pups in...

This should help with your questions also call a vet and ask them any questions that you might have that are not covered by this site. This will also get you acquainted with a vet.
