My boyfriend and I are going out of state to visit his family for Christmas. This will be my first time meeting his family, they live 5 hours away.
Should I bring something? Or not? If so, what are some good ideas? I want to make a good impression without looking cheesy or like I am trying to kiss up.

Valentine, I LOVE your idea but I am afraid LOL.. he could give Emeril a run for his money whereas I can barely make ramen noodles without setting off the smoke alarms lol. But I will definitely consider trying.

If it is the first time you have met his family.. I would shy away from anything alcoholic.
Ask your BF what they are like - or better - shop for it together.
I've always found that a nice floral holiday centerpiece for the table is always well received.

Yes,take a gift........Yourself,then when you arrive be a careful attentive girlfriend.Watch the family dynamics. How does he treat his Mom??Does he listen or chirp back disrespectfully?
Remember you are next in line for his respect.

Be a great guest, clean up after yourself.Keep the room you stay in tidy.DON"T sleep in too long.Ask if there is any thing you can do to help with dinners, help clear the table at least.
If there is siblings, make a effort to know them, include them. This a opportunity to be special to more than your boyfriend.
If you still feel compelled to do something after your arrival go to the store leave a nice thank you card.Don't forget to be yourself. You'll have a great time and they will want you back.

Find out from your boyfriend what they like first. If they drink, you could bring a couple of bottles of really nice wine in a nice fabric wine wrap. It's always nice to think of a gift basket with either some nice household items like guest towels, soaps, etc. or gourmet food choices. Keep it general and thoughtful. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness more than the gift.

Yes. I'd take flowers for the mother (the mother is always the key and you want to keep her happy with you), also some sort of baked goods or a box of good chocolate for the rest of the family.

Yes, bring something. Ask your boyfriend what the lady of the house likes and get something for the house or a gift certificate to a restaurant, something but not too expensive.

A dessert is a good idean, but make sure they aren't diabetic. :) and don't be afraid, there are a lot of really heavenly simple desserts. like Magic Bars

Box of Graham Crackers,
Stick of real butter

(meal the butter and mix it in with the crushed graham crackers to make a crust. Line the pan with the crust - 9x5)

One can of sweetened condensed milk
(Make a layer on the crust)
One bag of chocolate chips (semi sweet)
Make a layer
One small bag of coconut (shredded)
Make a layer
Bake until the coconut is golden brown and cool, cut into bars. (350 oven)
Try not to eat them all before you get there. :)

Val, your a gal after my own heart!

Unless your boyfriend tells you they don't drink, flowers for the lady of the house and a bottle of wine for the gentleman of the house is traditional.

I feel that a beautiful Poinsettia Plant and a Christmas card is all that is necessary. I'm sure if they need anything else they can discuss that with their son....
