Christians tend to quote this statement as an exclusionary statement. They often interpret it as saying, "if you don't 'accept' Jesus, you can't get to heaven." That's a pretty shallow interpretation of what Jesus had to say.
I think of it rather as Jesus identifying himself with the logos (the divine creative principle by which the universe is brought into being, ordered and sustained). John explicitly identifies Jesus with the logos in his gospel, so that matches the context. If Jesus is the logos, then to say he is the Way (or the Tao, if you like... and I do) is rather his way of saying that anyone who comes to the Father, anyone who seeks Truth, anyone who seeks Life, comes through Christ whether they realize it or not.
Peace to you.

Christianity is just one of a number of religions. It is said to be the largest in the world but I have doubts about the way this figure is arrived at as a lot of people who claim or accepted as Christians never go to church or take part in any christian activities. The only thing we really know about Jesus is from material written many years after his death. The 4 gospels in the bible only 4 of about 30 odd ones written about him a lot of which do not even mention the Crucifixion. Probably he was a radical Jewish preacher and a lot of the material we have is what people would like to believe about him rather that what is true. I would think that the reason why Christianity is so wide spread it because Constantine adopted it as the official Roman religion which gave it a powerful boost in the then known world

Either we wish to serve God or we don't.
The inspired word says through the apostle Paul:
'But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached unto you let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.'
Galatians 1:8,9
The disciples and apostles were eye witnesses to many of the things that Jesus said and did. Some of them watched Jesus being taken up into heaven to be with his Father after his death and resurrection.
The Apostle Paul had originally been fiercly against the Christian believers and had tried his best to persecute them. But Paul (Saul)was turned around by a blinding light from heaven as he travelled along the road to Damascus and Jesus spoke to him: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" and Jesus told him to go into the city were he would be told what to do. He had to be led there because the light had blinded him for three days.
So here was a very knowledgable man who had formerly slung Christians into prison being forced to reasses his role in life. He went and preached the raised Jesus and the gospel of the coming kingdom.
So, we read the evidence of the Bible and make it a matter of prayer to God that we may understand and have faith.
After that repentance and baptism (total immersion, like Jesus). A new life cleared of all the past baggage. It's great, try it!

How do we know that all the other thousands of religions and billions of believers are not 'the way' (or at least 'a' way?)
We don't of course, it's a matter of faith.
But Monotheists (Christians, Jews and Muslims) believe that there is only one God and one way to him. Although not necessarily the same way.
Other religions don't generally think like this. In particular, poly/pantheistic religions accept that there may be many ways to 'god' because there are many (or all is) Gods.
But as for proof as to who (if any) is right ... there is none.
Peace.

your questions demand large answers and I cannot do that now. email me if you wish to discuss more.
but very briefly:
There is none good but God. We are all sinners in desperate need of a Savior. Jesus said that unless we believe in Him, we are subject to the wrath of God.
Christianity is inifinitely more superior than any other belief system because
1. it is based in history.
2. our Savior is a living risen Savior.
3. The Bible is the word of God and can be trusted.
4. Only Christianity provides assurance of salvation after death.
5. Only Christianity offers a complete "new birth" in this life.
god bless

Christian answer: Pascal's Wager, a.k.a. John 3:16
Christians sometimes proffer Pascal’s Wager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pascal%27s_wager ) suggesting to non-believers that they should accept Jesus (John 3:16) as some sort of insurance policy against hell, just in case it turns out god really exists. The fallacy with this line of reasoning is that faith in god for some reward or to avoid punishment is not faith at all. It is a selfish act to receive something in return for a belief. The point of religious belief so that one becomes a better person, not to receive a reward or please a spiritual being.

we know that something or someone is a way if he or it leads to a point tha we want to arrive at. One cannot know if a certain way leads somewhere unless he starts to tred along that path. Jesus says thaa 'the Father and I are one" so obviously from His own words he is the best path or way

I don't think Christianity is superior to any other religion.... you believe in what you believe in. Some people believe that the Holy Bible is the only true book and that God and Jesus are the only way... but I don't think so.... it's all about personal belief. I don't think any religion is above any other religion.

Taste and see that the Lord is good.....check it out yourself. It is the only faith where God does it all for you. You do not earn your salvation that has been done for you, your part is to believe in the one that did it for you, ie Jesus.
