What a foolish notion!

That's an easy one! It's because killing isn't wrong when it is done by an angry mob in the name of justice (or God, or eugenics, or just because they were bored). Why do you think so few people were ever punished for lynching people in the past? It's because they pulled the Justice card, and went on their angry mob way...that's the America I love...

Seriously, though, it is a completely messed concept, based on an "eye for an eye" mentality that no other civilized nation in the Western world holds onto. It is disgusting, it is archaic, it is wrong, but we hold onto it, because we love punishment....almost as much as we love crime.

That's not the reason for capital punishment.

The reason is justice.

If I steal a sheep, do I deserve death? That would be injustice.

If I committed a premeditated murder, would a 10-year jail term do? That will also be injustice.

Justice. Or to stop them from killing again.

To keep this from happening http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4158/is_20000722/ai_n14320102 It's a bit difficult to kill anyone else when you're dead.

One of my favorite bumper stickers.

Capital punishment is sort of the epitome of hypocrisy, isn't it?
"Hey! You can't just kill someone. And to prove that it's wrong, I'm going to essentially duplicate the act that has me all ticked off in the first place..."

Ah, irony. I love it.

So they wouldn't kill, duh!

EDIT
------
they doesn't mean the people who killed (well, they die too) but they as in other people...

We don't all do that. If you live in the 'Christian' U.S. you do. If you live in another country that doesn't have so many religious nuts, you don't. Australia doesn't have the death penalty.
