I think most recipes call for dark Rum, as opposed to light (clear) rum.
For example, Rum cake uses dark rum.

For drinking purposes, I enjoy drinking dark rum straight up, clear rum in mixed drinks. Mojitos, for example, are made with clear rum. A Zombie is made with a mix of rums.
Spiced rum (like Captain Morgans) is also used in some drinks, such as a Captain Morgan and Coke. I really enjoy that drink.
As far as brands of dark rums, I've actually collected a few bottles of various types of rum from Havana Club (not available in the US). My favorite is their Anejo, which is a dark rum aged 7 years. I love drinking that neat (straight up, no ice).
Flor de Cana is another nice dark rum, from Nicaragua.

If you like the rum in cakes and stuff it is not much different on
it's own or with ther stuff Coke being a favorite of most.
If you want a good brand try Appleton's caribbean rum or Bacardi and for eggnog captain morgan's is one of the best.

Never drink 120 Proof White Rum.
The regular rum,is strong enough.
Coconut rum is good to flavor.
I hope you are of drinking age?

get Tattoo by Captain Morgan. it is a sweet rum, and mixes exceptionally well with Dr. Pepper. Be careful though, because you will hardly be able to taste it, and you can drink too much very easily. give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Please stay away from Capt'n Morgan... it is a horrible rum and an insult to the taste. The only rum I've drank as of late is Pyrat XO and it is comparable in flavor to many of the more expensive styles.
