Some people seem to have done that.
Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth or Jesus. What better way to do that then in the spirit of giving and good will? Santa was meant to be an embodiment of this message, but has turned into more of a logo for toys then anything, something which turns an incredible profit. That is why Christmas is so commercialized.
It's sad what this generation has done to a very good holiday.
Happy new year and Merry Christmas to you too.

Christmas is about the birth of Christ.
Pagan "holidays" were intertwined with Christian "holidays" after the crusades were over.
Most of the motifs and designs used in modern day Xmas celebrations are Pagan (not christian) in origin. to name a few : the hanging of mistletoe and holly, the eating of Ham and even the decorating of xmas trees.
Neopagans have removed all christian elements (the birth of Christ) and just kept the eating, drinking and gift giving (which were all Pagan originated anyway)
So if your not celebrating Christs' birth then you are celebrating the Pagan winter festival. which is called Yule. Yule was originally celebrated between the start of Dec. and Start of Jan. depending on the Lunar Calender. After the Crusades over through the barbarians these holidyas were brought together on the Christian Date of Dec 25.

Santa is based on St Nicholas who was a real person who was a very charitable person who gave to others and asked nothing in return. Santa Claus does the same. Stress and overspending only happen if you allow it to happen,
May you have a most Blessed and Happy Christ-mass and a very blessed New Year

Thank you for your kind wishes. May the Yuletide season bring you blessings as well.
As for the question - the original holiday was about celebrating the Solstice and/or the birth of savior sun gods (usually born of a virgin who grew to perform miracles and had symbolic animals - Mithra, anyone?). The bit of Santa bringing gifts was a merging of a Germanic custom with that of the story of the magi bringing gifts to the Christ child - according to the Bible story (which didn't take place in winter).

Santa is not associated with Jesus... it's just part of the Christmas celebrations. Christmas is about giving and thinking of others and Santa is an introduction to that idea for children.

Well Santa came from St. Nick whose feast day is the 6th of December. If I'm remebering correctly about him he was from holland and was wealth and would leave money in the childrens wooden shoes at night to help the faimilies out. Thats why when I was little on the 6th of December we always took off our shoes and left them in the halway and Santa would come leave candy in our shoes and come inside the classroom and give us candycanes and after he would leave we'd all go get our shoes and eat the candy! More about St. Nick on the link

Hehe. The original holiday was all about gift giving. And Jesus christ is the greatest gift of all. You're right, none compare to that gift, and we ought not feel the need to try so hard. Merry Christmas to you, and happy new year. ^_^

I never have equated one with the other. When I was a little kid in school, I got sent to the principal's office because I told the teacher I refused to participate in the yearly "santa thing" celebration. Eventually, I was sent to see a psychiatrist because they thought I had issues for "not" believing in santa. Gee, if I had only been normal.....

Its a mixture of Saint nick being a nice guy at Christmas, Pagan Gods (giving Santa the big fat man look) and people looking for an excuse to go crazy

Santa never has been equated to Jesus. Santa is simply a figure that brings presents, like the three wise men brought to Jesus.
