just like the other guy said free and secure are the bigest things http://distrowatch.com/ they had a top ten list that would be a good place to start I prefer linux mint ,I would recomend using freespire for begginers and then move into ubuntu, mepis, or pc linux somthing of that sort. About anything on the debian branch is very nice to work with even the red hat branch is OK. the slackware stuff is more for advanced users and very complex at times.
