that's exactly what I did, I started dating him at 14, got engaged at 16, got married at 18, and now I'm 34, have two kids and am still in love with him.

Depending on the age of consent in your state, you could get married at age 16 without parental consent.
So yes, you could get engaged at 16 and married at age 18.
IMO that sounds like a perfect engagement length.

You can be engaged whenever you want. Engagement is merely wearing a ring, it doesn't really mean anything outside of the relationship. So you can get engaged whenever you like, and be engaged for as long as you like.
Generally, it is a huge mistake to get married so young. If you really love each other that much, why not just get a 'promise ring' and leave it at that for now? You both have many years ahead of you, and there is no sensible reason to rush things.

Hey,
we got engaged 2 years ago this xmas. We're getting married in June next year. You can be engaged for as long as you like, it's just a step towards spending the rest of your life with your soul mate. Good luck!

yes. being engaged for a long time is much better than a short time. you have the half feeling of being married and you can still have the time to make a decision before all the marriage plans are set.
if you plan on staying with this person, i recommend a long engagement.

Yes, plenty of people are engaged for long periods of time. I will be engaged almost 2 years when I finally get married in October.

I would discourage any engagement at 16. Your mindset is often very different at 18 than it was at 16.
I also think long engagements are a joke. When you get engaged, you should be setting a date within a couple of months so that you can start wedding plans. Otherwise, why bother? Just keep dating until something better comes along?

Engagement isn't a legal thing so you could get engaged at age 1 if you wanted because there are no laws to govern it, but actual marriage involves legal stuff so you have to follow laws to get married.

As far as being engaged for a long time, yes, of course. Two years isn't that long at all. It's smart to be engaged for a long time.
However, to be engaged at sixteen and married at eighteen is very young!
