YES and YES. Your body can turn anything you eat into fat. Fat is the the secondary fuel that runs your body; sugar being the primary fuel. IF you eat grease you'll get fat if you eat too much you can get fat. you'd be amazed a how many morbidly obese vegetarians there are out there.
So really comes down to being strategic about how and what you eat and not forgetting to exercise.

You can get fat from either one, you just get fat a lot faster eating, say, burgers than you would eating, say, salads. But if you ate a warehouse full of lettuce, you'd eventually take in enough calories that your body would turn them into fat, even though you're eating fat-free food.

A lot of factors determine your weight. Just eating a lot will not necessarily make you fat. I eat more than most fat people, and I weigh 95 lbs.

Obesity is the result of more food intake in calories than the body requires to sustain itself. Instead of converting to energy, the excess turns to fat. It also depends on the diet if too much of one type of food( donuts, for example) are eaten the body will convert what it cant absorb, intofat.

It's BOTH.
You get fat when you don't burn off the calories you consume. The body stores the excess calories as fat--to be used at a later time.
