you need to at least see an optometrist because generally your primary care doctor knows say if your vision is 20/20 or 20/30 or whatever it may be that is not knowing what an eyeglasses prescription is. there are specific measurements that an eye doctor needs to do in order to write an eyeglass Rx.

Either an Ophthalmologist (MD) or an Optometrist (OD) can do an eye refraction and prescribe glasses. My personal experience has been that optometrists take more time and are less likely to pawn off the refraction to a technician or other assistant. Conversely, many of them make money on the sale of contacts or glasses which can be a conflict of interest. An ophthalmologist will just give you a prescription and send you to an optician for fitting. To me, a good eye exam depends on a cooperative patient, and a patient examiner who is well trained and has a good work ethic.

What can the Optometrist do without the prescription? Your Dr isn't being reasonable. The Optometrist can't just "wing it"!

Your general physician cannot give you an accurate eye prescription as he simply does not have the equipment to do it. There are many things involved with the measurement of the curvature of you optic lens .. and so forth.
See an optometrist or ophthalmologist. Your vision is too important to play around with.

You had an eye test by a doctor that is not an Optometrist? I wonder why. Probably legally they're not allowed because that is not their field.

Maybe he's worried it's a liability since he's not an optometrist? It can't hurt to get an eye exam from your optometrist, though.

Because an MD cannot prescribe glasses. It requires an Ophthalmologist or an Optometrist.

He may suspect that you have eye problems that only an optometrist can look into. It is worth it if that is the case.

Tell him that you intend to get your glasses when you move to Patagonia. That the Optomitrist, Ybarra Rojas, does not have an address and it takes 3 months by Sled Dog.

Even if he knows your prescription, he might need to make sure it is as up to date as possible
