First of all, take lessons from a well-qualified teacher and practice the moves on a daily basis. Once you're more comfortable with the basics, you can do other things such as:
*join a school and/or community dance group
*go see other dancers perform on a regular basis--doesn't have to be just break dancers either
*become familiar with the different genres of music that can be used in your routines
*learn other dance styles for the same reason
* learn what's happening in the dance world by joining email lists, attending masterclasses, conferences, etc

Late starter eh?...check out an old recording of "Top Of The Pops"(UK TV) circa 1980's...of Geoffrey Daniels(Shalamar) dancing to "A night to remember"?...He learnt it from watching New York street dancers!...makes MJ look like a beginner!...

Do you think people from the movie Rize learned from a dance school? No! They got it from the streets. They may not be "professionally trained" but they were great enough to be in a movie!
learn from the best
Don't just go to school for it
don't just pay for lessons
learn it from actual Hip Hop
go to people that know how to do it, have them teach you. They don't need some degree to show that they can dance.
I have seen some crappy hip hop classes.
