I've been told by women that it protects their modesty and helps them from being taken advantage of by men or being prostituted on the streets like they seem to think that all Western women are.
But that's just the surface of the issue, like when Republicans say that keeping gays out of the military helps to protect unit cohesion.
Hijab is really a way to control women because Muslims don't like the idea of females making personal choices. Rejecting hijab may also lead to changes in laws that discriminate against women, such as driving rules in Saudi Arabia (also called, as I remember, a "protection" for the modesty of women).
There is also a part of Islam that is apologetic towards men and their sexual urges for women. They seem to think a woman's clothing invites sexual urges, instead of holding men responsible for rape and other behavior, which (not coincidentally) requires four witnesses to prove in Shariah court, or the women gets charged with confessing for adultery. They seem to forget that whatever a woman wears (even a tarp) will not stop men from thinking about sex, and that men are ultimately responsible for their choices.

I wear the hijab so that men are not overwhelmed by uncontrollable lust when they see my hair. In fact I am forced to wear a burqa when I have to confront whole crowds of men in the mall on Saturday afternoon.
It seems that Allah (may his name be praised) forgot to instill men with self-control, so the poor dears cannot be trusted with the merest glimpse of female flesh.
It's very convenient as I only have to wear a thong and fishnet stockings underneath.
I have argued with many Mu'minoon, that the Q'ran uses the term "hijab" to mean a curtain. Now why would anyone wear a curtain? They just tell me to stop using wikipedia, because it's not a recognised source for Islamic scholarship.

On a positive note however, I never have a bad hair day and shoplifting is easy. I wouldn't be without my beloved burqa.

Please ignore all of the ranting people who do not know what the hijab truly means. They just want a place to hate on Islam. Islam literally means submission, not bondage. Basically it is submission to God. The hijab is NOT to disgrace women. The hijab was designed to help women keep their modesty. When i walk outside wearing my hijab, people cannot see what my body or hair looks like. If someone is talking to me, it is because of my mind, not my body. In places like the US, it seems like a woman is only as good as her body. By wearing a hijab, a woman takes the emphasis away from her body and puts it on her mind. And as stated earlier, men have their forms of modesty as well.

Basically, the preservation of a religious practice.
But I like asna127's opinion that if a man is talking to a woman wearing a hijab, it is because of the woman herself and not her looks. "By wearing a hijab, a woman takes the emphasis away from her body and puts it on her mind." (mind as in soul...)
I think that's one of the reasons why it's still popular.

Peace and blessings be upon you
Islam in language means submission to the God and none other than him.
From the word Islam , we get the word Salam which means peace.
I am Muslim and i am happy and proud of that and i am completely know that the God want my happiness and to protect me.
Islam gave me all the rights which enable me to share in the life and to learn and asked all people to respect me as a mother , daughter and wife.
About me , i can't imagine myself walk in the street and someone behind me talk or look to my legs , arms , hairs , curves,......
IN my wide clothes ,protection for myself and my society , while i move with short clothes or tight , i seduce men , isn't it better to let them concentrate in their work or study or anything more important?
when man look to a pretty woman and see her feminity , this may make his woman less in his eyes.
when i own something and i feel that it is valuable , i take care of it , put it in box or hide it.
when i eat the food , will i eat the covered food or the uncovered food?
will you eat the food which the flies stand above it? or the food which never be touched?
the covered food is cleaner.

Some will say it is to protect women from predator men - but that all men except their fathers and husbands are predators. It is a way to rule women by instilling the fear that if they show their hair they will end up being disrespected or raped.
I have more trust in men than to insult them that way.

when you cover your body these are the results
#1 you are worshiping your creator and making him pleased with you
#2 when covered you are not treated like a toy you are a person with a brain that can think
#3 no matter what anyone says it is hardwired into mens body there is a part of a mens brain that they think about women and s**.do not get me wrong women have that too but mens are twice as big if you do not believe me go to drphil.com so when you are dressed provocitevly men tend to think bad thoughts and it helps there thoughts turn into actions. and the more you do something wrong the easier it becomes for you to do it
#4 you reduce the risks of rape etc most raped girls do not wear enough clothes. when guys get caught they say well , she was wearing a tiny miny skirt blaa blaa blaa as dumb as that sounds do you think that it is out of question that it had absolutely nothing to do with it and i am not justifying it in any way shape or form i am completly against it even if the girl is being barely dressed and has 10 pounds of makeup on
#5 it is becoming fashionable because girls are making it more attractive and dressing it well!
#6 it does not mean bondage because it is your complete choice whether you decide to folow it or not it actually means surrender and it is your choice to surrender

Its modesty. Would you rather have your mother, wife, daughter walking out in the streets releaving her body to other men? so that they can drool over her? So that she can feel cheap, or attract attention to herself? You may ask why rape isnt so common in muslim countries? why because men honour women. I think people also are forgetting that Haijab does not mean the covering of the head for women, But men have hijaab too! they have to dress modestly aswel, and lower their gaze when seeing the opposite sex, they are not allowed to wear tight clothing to show there figure either! theres lots more to go into. Its not just in Islam that women cover their heads but also in Judaism and Christianity
There can be only one answer to this: yes, it is! Simply open the Bible to the First Epistle to the Corinthians, chapter 11. Read verses 3-10.
But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying with his head covered, disgraces his head. But every woman praying or prophesying with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is the same as if she were shaven. For if a woman is not covered, let her be shaven. But if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head. A man indeed ought not to cover his head, because he is the image and glory of God. But woman is the glory of man. For man was not created for woman, but woman for man. This is why the woman ought to have a sign of authority over her head, because of the angels.
The meaning of this passage is plain enough. We can make the following syllogisms:
Syllogism 1
Praying with an uncovered head is a disgrace
Having a shaved head is the same as praying with an uncovered head
Therefore, having a shaved head is a disgrace
Syllogism 2
If it is a disgrace for a woman to have a shaved head, she should cover her head
It is a disgrace for a woman to have a shaved head - see syllogism 1
Therefore, a woman should cover her head

I find that all religions are about controlling the followers.
I think that your progression of interpretation of Islam, is going rather to far.
