I am German and live here since 23 years. In order to get a green card do you have to have a sponsor--someone who is willing to take responsibility for you. The usual route is to get married. The American spouse is the sponsor.
Another option is to apply to go to an American University and when accepted to apply for a student visa. This visa does not allow you to work in the U.S., but it does allow you to live here and go to school here for up to 2 years, then you have to renew everything.....

A third option is if you already have friends here. If those friends can show that you are the only one who can do a certain type of job for them then chances are that an application would be accepted. In that case the friend/or employer would also be the sponsor.

The fourth option is the immigration lottery, check with the American consulate in your area about that and good luck

It really depends on:

What kind of family you have available for sponsorship.
What is your professional background.

Let me explain:

If you have parents or siblings who are US Citizens, you can be sponsored.
If you are unmarried, you can get green card through marriage.
If you have sufficient employment experience and can get employer to sponsor, you can green card through work visa.

You should consult a lawyer to get specific advise based on specifics of his or her situation and objective.

Reside or work in USA for a long period of time and when you are already financially established, you can already apply for a greencard.
