The M-16 has proven itself for over 40 years to be an excellent close and mid range weapon. For long range I would select the Springfield from your list followed closely by the M-1 Garand. the others are either not the best or are specialty weapons not the best for the average grunt to haul around and shoot bad guys.

That's my opinion, for what it's worth. Others may have a different opinion that does not agree with mine. But you know what they say...... opinions are like hiney holes, we all have one and they all stink according to the next guy.

Those are a bit dated. The HK-91 is a superb rifle, as it uses the powerful .308 and is capable of pretty accurate fire out some distance. By the same measure, an M-14 or M1A would also be good, as they're accurate, and still shoot .308 fairly well.

If you're going to be away from any kind of supplies for a while, an M16 or AR-15 makes a good rifle, as the .223 is still an effective round, but it's about half the weight and much has much smaller cases than the .308. For a survivalist situation, that would be just the ticket, as you wouldn't be weighed down by ammunition, and the light alloy receivers are easier to carry, and more durable than stamped sheet metal.

Out of the ones you have up there, I'd say the Thimpson or Garand would be good, as they're capable of putting rounds down fast, both have an effective cartridge(.30-06 and .45ACP), and both are fairly accurate.

If you're clearing a building or in closer quarters, a good pump or semi-auto shotgun would be just the ticket, but a Colt 1911 in .45ACP would be an excelent choice, as well. The 12 gauge shotgun is one of the most versitile firearms currently made, being able to shoot shot, slugs, flechette darts, small explosive charges, as well as others. It can also be used to throw ropes with the appropriate blanks. The 1911 is, in my oppinion, one of the greatest pistols made. Modern pistols are getting too synthetic, and on something like a pistol, you can't have anything break.

You know you can tell the people who watch to much TV and listen to the range guys who think they know everything. The M16 is not a good firearm and never has been. It has only proven that our goverment would rather save a buck than to give the defending company a firearm that doesnt require a clean room to operate. Any infantryman that has seen combat will confirm the M16 and AR sisters are worthless when it comes down to it.

The M1 was an excellent firearm for its time but I assume your looking for the best and it has gotten alot better since the M1 days. HK makes the HK416, for small arms combat there is no other choice. Its rare that we see them in the field due to the cost however, this is as good as it gets. The 416 is how Colt should have build the AR rifles.

Side arm would be the HK USP or the Springfield XD series. The P2000 has come up in the ranks aswell for those who are allowed to choose their weapons in the field.

Midrange Firearms are few and far between. Personaly I would look for a FAL rifle. Some M4 mods are ok for this application but their ability to hold up under real time conditions are no better than the M16.

Good Luck and Happy Shooting !

I very own 3 Lee-Enfield rifles, chambered for .303 British. i've got fired, yet do no longer very own, an SKS rifle. Accuracy? The Lee-Enfield layout is extra precise, yet a drained rifle or an improperly bedded inventory can cut back accuracy. yet an SKS in unfavourable situation might shoot badly too. while in stable situation, the two rifle can shoot communities measuring 4 m.o.a. or much less. potential? The .303 British cartridge is extra useful than the 7.62x39mm cartridge. Ammunition availability? The 7.62x39mm cartridge is properly-known and obtainable in maximum areas. The .303 British cartridge is obtainable from countless on line distributors and extra suitable retailers, like Cabela's. yet, maximum interior reach gun shops do no longer carry dissimilar .303 British ammunition and it expenditures extra suitable than 7.62x39mm. fee of hearth? The SKS can hearth a loaded magazine extra straight away. even even with the undeniable fact that the Lee-Enfield layout is the quickest and smoothest bolt-action obtainable, it nevertheless isn't semi-automated. (till you install a Pederson device?) Reload time? each rifle might properly be loaded by ability of using stripper clips. i might say a arranged shooter might desire to load the two rifle straight away. powerful selection? The Lee-Enfield rifle has a better powerful selection. city wrestle / residing house-clearing / Hand-to-hand wrestle? The SKS rifle is shorter and extra straightforward to flow in tight areas. With bayonets affixed, the Lee-Enfield has an prolonged attain, yet its longer length and bolt-action layout are not ideal for residing house-clearing. base line? the alternative relies upon on what you go with to do with a rifle. The SKS is a stable decision till a objective is previous a hundred twenty five yards. For objectives previous a hundred twenty five yards, the Lee-Enfield is extra powerful, yet you will pay extra suitable for the overall performance skill.

The shotgun and possibly the bazooka seem to be the only "guns" listed....

In military usage, the term refers only to artillery that fires projectiles at high velocity, such as naval guns (which are never referred to as cannon) or tank guns. A gunner is a member of the team charged with the task of operating and firing a gun. By military terms, mortars and all hand-held firearms are excluded from the definition of guns. Two exceptions to this are the shotgun—which is hand-held, has a smooth bore and fires a load of shot or a single projectile known as a slug and the machine gun—which is a fully-automatic weapon mounted on a tripod or bipod and almost always operated by a crew.

Yeah, you missed the M1 Carbine and Lee Enfield.I think depending on the skill of the user, the best mid range would be a SPAS-12 shotgun,P90 submachine gun,or the H&K MP7.

Medium range, I'd take the M1, then the Mauser or Springfield. I like to make shots count, not spray'n'pray.

Close range, the Tommy.

The BAR was a beast to control and very few people could weild that gun effectively, however it's nice to have one in the squad.

Of course, you have the 1911 on your belt at all times.

The one that you know how to use the best.

Or as I feel the one that puts the most lead down range the fastest.

So for me none of the above. I would take a M240B. High rate of fire good cartridge in the 7.62x51mm. So that is mine.

Any of the true assault rifles (select fire) like the AR-15/M-16 series, AK series, Famas, etc. I would prefer the 5.56mm for controlability, capacity, and firepower.

Update: Anyone who claims the M-14 or FN-FAL is livng in the 1950s.
