I have a car title where my name is listed as the purchaser, but I never registered the car. The car doesn't run and I want to sign it over to a salvage yard. Can I just cross out my name and write the salvage yard's name as the new owner?

No. You can not change anything, cross anything out, or use white out on a title, if you do it becomes null and void.

But ask the salvage yard, they may accept the title as it is. If not you will have to first change the title and put it in your name, and then sign it off to the salvage yard.

No need to cross out your name as new registered owner. Just give the salvage yard a bill of sale for the amount they paid you. Then send off the appropriate paper work to the DMV to release your liability of the car. ( tell the DMV who the car belongs to now)

Depending on where you live (I'm in Kentucky), and assuming that you just signed the title(it's not actually in your name), you can't do anything legally without transferring to your name first. The title has to be signed over by the person it is registered to. I do this for a living and with more information I may be able to help you. Feel free to email me if you can't find a good answer.
