O come, O come, Emmanuel

During this season of Advent when all of Christendom looks back to the first coming of Christ at Bethlehem and looks to the future when Christ will come again, I add my voice:
"O come, O come, Emmanuel!"

With love in Christ.

O Come Divine Messiah (Divin Messie)

O Come Divine Messiah, the World in Silence Waits the day, when Hope shall sings its triumph and sadness flee away. Dear Savior Haste, Come down to earth Come Down! Dispel the Night and Show Your Face and bid us hail the dawn of grace. O Come Divine Messiah, the World in Silence waits the day, when hope shall sing its Triumph and sadness flee away.

Emmanuel -

Come, Come! Emmanuel, Son of God appear. Heaven and Earth rejoice. Salvation is Drawing Near.

In the Day of the Lord (M.D. Ridge)

In the Day of the Lord the Sun will shine like the dawn of eternal day. All creation will rise to dance and sing the glory of the Lord!

I love the joyful anticipation on the first Sunday of Advent ... knowing we'll be singing "O Come, O Come Emmanuel". I start feeling it as I drive to Mass, and even more as I walk into the church. The first "Rejoice!" of the chorus seems to vibrate the walls, and never fails to give me goosebumps. Rejoice, Someone special is coming!

Well, obviously, to say this is my favorite Advent hymn is an understatement.

Oh Holy night
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Saviors birth

Long lay the world
In sin and error pining
'Till He appeared and the soul felt it's worth

A thrill of hope
the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks
A new and glorious morn...

Funny that some people answered the question with Christmas hymns.

Of course, it is not Advent unless we have sung "Come, thou long-expected Jesus," but I suppose my favorites are "Lo! he comes, with clouds descending," sung to Helmsley, and "Sleepers, Wake!" in the JS Bach arrangement.

Joy to the world! the Lord is come:
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns:
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.
