The word CHURCH is only mentioned in the NEW TESTAMENT. Throughout the Old Testament the only word used was TEMPLE, whether referring to the house of GOD built by King Salomon, or any of the pagan ones to which they unfortunately went to offending God repeatedly, since this was one of the things he prohibited the Israelites from doing.

Concerning the Church as it is mentioned in the New Testament, I don't recall prohibition of instruments. Whereas in the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites strict rules for when to play the horn, and some other instruments.

To be better informed, since I haven't read the Bible in a long time, I would advice you to begin reading it a bit every day from the beginning_and try not to skip those parts where it seems that every rule, regulation, etc. is interminably repeated! After going through these parts you will once again read about completely other subjects and amazing stories, etc.

You will not find anything in the Bible prohibiting musical instruments in church. I used to go to a Mennonite church that did not have musical instruments, but they did excellent 4-part harmony singing. I believe that the Church of Christ doesn't have instruments. From my understanding and research, I think this came from post-Reformation rejection of worldly amusements. Rightly so, many churches did not want the service to be a "performance", but a time of worship and learning. Some have eliminated things that are unnecessary, like musical instrument, feeling that they contribute to the idea that people come to hear a performance.

I have sung in a very good church choir for years, and know that music is a powerful tool in creating an atmosphere that encourages faith and openness to God. Besides our organist, some of our performances have had brass ensembles and orchestras. The "contemporary" service has guitars and drums. People come away from those services with tear-stained faces, thanking us for bringing them closer to God. I think the church ought to do all they can to provide the best music they can. People shouldn't go to the "world" for the best music, when Christian music, singing and playing of instruments, can draw them to true worship.

there is no where in the bible that says instruments were wrong. Read the palms, David used music to soothe Saul;s evil spirit.

The bible also says: MAke a joyful noise unto the lord

In the old testament they danced and used tamberines to the Lord-

Well the bible doesn't dictate what is to occur in church as church post dates the bible. Church as we know it was not part of the actual concept of the original Christian worship. The way a church functions has to do with the administration of that particular sect.

This is a controversial question... yes, it says in the Bible to make a joyful noise to the Lord and lots of other praise verses, but they are in the old testament. And Christians live by the New testament, not the Old. My personal belief is that if you can use music to truly praise and worship God, it is ok. But, if music is a distraction or "showy" to someone, then they should not use musical instraments and thats fine too. The focus should be on God, not human arguments.

You can't find where its wrong because its not in there, not in the OT or the NT. Some preach against it because it isn't mentioned in the NT verses @ all. They say that's the time we're living in(true). Therefore, they say speak where the Bible speaks and be silent where it is silent. In the OT they are widely spoken of in praise to God. See Psalms 150:2-6 for a specific example.

Instuments were played in the Bible, for instance David played the harp. Why would it be wrong to play instruments in church?

Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord (Psalm 100)

Psalm 100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye lands.

I think that says it best - bring on the instruments and make noises that announce your joy in the Lord.
