Not a good idea to microwave prawns in order to defrost them.
Put the bag into cold water for a while, abt an hr, then open bag, put them into a dish, to defrost the rest of the time.
Whole process should take no longer than 2-3 hrs.

Don't use the micro. They're difficult to judge in them. If put on a metal plate at room temperature, spread out, they will defrost in an hour. If you must micro 1 min and check. Frozen prawns are already cooked normally. They'll be pink if they are cooked. Check packaging info. DB

if you do use microwave set it to about 10% power and defrost slowly, i usually defrost in cold water changing it after about 10 mins, , check the packet as some need to defrost for about 6 hours at room temp.
you can add straight to curries etc or fry slowly in butter and garlic. dont over cook as they go like rubber,. with big prawns i like to roll in flower then dip in beaten egg with a little soy sauce in then deep fry for about 2 mins.
when you cut prawns open there should be no transperent flesh left, all white then you know they are cooked ok.
enjoy

If you are going to cook them like in a stir fry you don't need to defrost, they cook quick. To defrost put in a colander and run cold water over them. It only takes a few minutes.
Edit: Missed the second part. If they are uncooked shrimp you only need to cook them until they turn pink. It only takes a few minutes.

Pink prawns are already cooked .If you wish to put them into recipes such as curries etc then only add them at the end .If you cook them too long they will become very rubbery.
You can quickly defrost them by putting them in a sieve and running warm water over them.

Put them in a collander under cold, running water for a couple of minutes. If you're sure they are raw, and not cooked, just put them in boiling water for a couple of minutes until they turn pink.
