For me, its both. A prime example is IKEA. The modern designs at an affordable price make it very popular amongst consumers. Interestingly enough, you see few television commercials advertisments compared to local furniture stores who advertise heavily, yet is very well-known internationally. What is impressive about their marketing is the fact that visitors at the store are encourage to sign up for the infamous *catalog* that is later mailed out for a short time period (direct marketing) which seems to generate millions of dollars worth of business. I also love the "twice a year sales" commericals that are literally run twice a year.

I wonder what IKEA's marketing plan looks like?

Style (or design / utility) first, cost second.

Like ERCOL .. can't afford it, so find some Italian made rip-off 'look-alike' at less than half the price & buy that instead ..
(most visitors can't tell the difference & will mistake it for the 'real thing' :-) )
