Last year, she opened an account but due to some circumstances, decided not to use it. When she got the atm and check book, she didn't deposit any amount and just decided not to use it. Does she have to close it??? Does she have to pay for anything???

You can't open an account without a deposit. The deposit has probably been sucked up my monthly service fees. She should go into a branch and have the account closed. The bank may owe her money.

Some banks charge a fee for balances below a certain amount; or if it is a checking account it may have a fee. Why doesn't she contact the bank and find out?

She could just go to the bank to close it. She may have monthly fees to pay or be deducted, but there is no penalty. Take the check books and ATM card so they can distroy them too. She needs to close it or she will be charge fees forever ...until she does close it.

She can close the account without a fee but doesn't have to close it. I f they don't charge her a monthly fee for not having a minimum balance in the account it doesn't hurt anything to keep it open.

It depends on the bank. There usually aren't fees for closing it, but there typically [not always] are monthly fees for having one open.

Shouldn't be any fees. Maybe a dormant account fee or something. Other than that if it had a positive balance just close it up.

Yes, she should close it. She would be responsible for any monthly fees but there shouldn't be a penalty for closing it.
