I ate at a Chinese restaurant last night that I have never been to before. I ate this creamy chicken with soy sauce and some dumplings along with dessert. I noticed about 2 hours later my gum was so swollen that my whole front teeth were almost covered up!

When I woke up this morning, my upper lip had a large bump on it and felt hot. I had Chinese food before, and I never had this happen before. I was wondering if this particular place maybe put MSG in their food? My grandmother was very allergic to MSG as well. I was just wondering if this was a symptom? Thanks!

Also, I would like to know what can I use to make the swelling go down? It is so swollen it looks like I have a 5 year old's front teeth! I don't want my teeth to look small, so I was wondering what could help the swelling?

You need to take some benadryl aka diphenhydramine. Also go see an allergist and get tested for allergies so you KNOW what you are allergic to. You may not be so lucky next time and might end up dead if you don't know what you are allergic to and you eat it again. I truely doubt it is MSG as that is found in TONS of products right on your grocery store shelf. Go see an allergist before this becomes a serious problem and ends up killing you because you can't get to the ER in time. Also if this happens again you need to go to ER so they can give you a shot of epinepherine. Once you see the allergist he will probably prescribe an epi pen for you to carry on you at all times.

It is very possible that it is an allergy to MSG or to an ingredient used in the food. I would take Benedryl to stop the allergic reaction and I would also do an ice pack 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to help the swelling.

OMG! That would put anyone off Chinese food. I can't believe there are still restaurants that use that foul stuff! MSG will kill you as fast as smoking. My Chinese place doesn't use it and their food is fresh and tasty. The sauces they use seem less heavy than other Chinese places. You just need to find a better Chinese Restaurant.

Sounds like MSG. Their food is loaded with it.
If it persists, you may need to see a doc.
Some allergies can be life threatening.

Yes. Rinse your mouth with salt water every hour or so. Call the doctor if it doesn't help. Drink lots of water.
