PORTLAND, Maine - Congressional candidate Dean Scontras called today for Governor Baldacci to terminate Maine's status as a sanctuary state for illegal aliens. Scontras said an executive order issued in 2004 has turned Maine into the nation's only sanctuary state, where people in the country illegally are entitled to the full range of welfare benefits, driver's licenses, and other privileges intended for lawful state residents.

"This misguided order by the governor is not in the best interest of Maine or our country," said Scontras, the leading Republican candidate for Maine's open 1st Congressional District seat. "At a time when Maine's economy is struggling, it is unconscionable that our highly taxed citizens should be expected to provide welfare and numerous other benefits for people who are in our country illegally."

The executive order in question, 13 FY 04/05, issued on April 9, 2004, is entitled "An Order Concerning Access to State Services by All Entitled Maine Residents". The order prohibits state workers from inquiring about the immigration status of anyone applying for services. Consequently, thousands of people of unknown origin have been issued Maine driver's licenses. No estimates exist for the number of illegal aliens who are collecting welfare, subsidized housing, food stamps, cash benefits and many other services that Maine provides. http://www.teamdean08.com/press_12.04.07.html

Because of politically correct polichickens. If you are from there, by all means hound their phone lines, send emails, faxes or letters. For the most part, most politicians will respond. Make your voice heard!! Urge friends and family to become active in this also.

It's a disgrace to see this happening in our Country. It is a sad day for America when Americans cannot get the help they need, yet an illegal can get anything they need. Talk about ungrateful greedy pigs.

The amount of fraud committed by illegal aliens is absolutely staggering. Officials and experts now calculate that over half of all child-identity theft is committed by illegal aliens. Some estimate that as many as half of the claimed "US-born" children collecting welfare, food stamps, WIC, medicaid, Sec 8 housing, utility assistance, and other taxpayer-paid benefits are actually identity-theft children. Even here on YA, teens have discovered they have accumulated a decade's worth of horrific debts and dreadful credit when they are still not even old enough to open a credit bureau file! The latest I saw within the past couple weeks was just 16 and it appears over a dozen people have been using his SSN and racking up six-figure debts over at least a decade. National network news a few years ago featured parents of a 3-week-old baby being dunned for tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills for "a man who walked in" to a medical center for treatment WHILE baby was being born in another hospital miles away. The parents had not yet received their newborn's Social Security card, yet it was already being used by adult illegal aliens. These frauds constitute a major portion of the trillion-plus dollars per year (net) cost of illegal aliens to US citizens every year since at least 2002. The costs of illegal aliens over just the past 9 years equals about 70% of the National Debt. Illegal aliens are a major factor in the shortage of Sec 8 housing for the elderly & disabled and the extremely long waiting lists, and in practically every difficulty Americans face in this economy.

Probably a bid for cheap labor in the past. According to some friends of mine in Maine, it's definitely come back to bite them in the ***.

Making sure illegals have nothing:

1) is a disincentive for them to be here

2) makes them desperate enough to live on the streets and commit crimes

So you kind of have to look at both sides of the coin and weigh the pros and cons. Some areas find it more worth it to provide them with social assistance than to let them become desperate enough to really threaten community statistics on safety, security and well-being.

Anti propoganda.......(with the exception of Liscences)

PROVE IT!!! Prove that illegals are the ones using those food and health benefits....you cant...bacuse its just "statistical assumption"

dont believe me... research it....See how many courts would accept that info as gospel truth ...none has or will....

Because the use of food anfd health benefits is JUST AN ANTI ASSUMPTION....a smokescreen so they can feel high and mighty about there baseless stance

Drivers liscences are beimng issued.....American bums are draining the benefits NOT illegals...they work, and you know it.
