Drs trying to make a diagnosis have logical steps they go through to make that diagnosis. Ultrasound is the second step in making a diagnosis on a suspicious breast lump. Ordering an MRI would be counterproductive and unnecessary at this point in time. If the ultrasound shows anything to be worried about then a CT scan or MRI might be down the road. If you need additional testing after the scan then a biopsy would come next. Do not jump to assumptions before the Dr has had a chance to make a proper diagnosis. Most likely you have a cyst and not breast cancer, especially if you drink lots of cola drinks or coffee. good luck with your tests

I don't understand why you think mammograms and ultrasounds don't show anything? Obviously mammograms DO show something, since you are getting an ultrasound. An ultrasound is the best option for the evaluation of a possible abnormality on a mammogram. MRI's are useful, but they can't detect tiny calcium specks, which make up about half of the cancers found with a mammogram. In addition, an ultrasound does not expose you to any radiation.

Who says mammos and ultrasounds don't show anything? I have been imaging breasts for 30 years and I know this much...
MRIs will be the next imaging step for breasts when they have done enough of them to be able to properly diagnose CANCER. right now, MRIs show up all kinds of crap that has to be removed because they don't know what they are looking at yet! AND it is prohibitively expensive to do MRIs as screening for breast cancer. Give it about 10 years before anyone seriously considers MRI as an appropriate modality for breast cancer screening.
UNTIL THAT HAPPENS...get that ultrasound! A simple cyst, which the ultrasound will determine, or not, is either ignored or drained with a needle. If it is something else, then a general surgeon will remove it. Or it may end up being nothing and you return to having the mammograms.
Calm down and have some respect and confidence in the DECADES of research done in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, thus far.

What makes you think that mammograms and ultrasounds don't show anything? Your mammogram most likely showed an abnormal area so the doctor wants more information. Ultrasounds are very good ways to find out if you have a cyst or not. If it is only a cyst you will probably need nothing else. I have fibrocystic breast which means that I have cysts in my breast...nothing more. MRI's are not the answer to all questions. Talk to your doctor and listen to what is being said. If you feel that you are not getting the answers that you need then please seek another opinion.

You don't want an MRI, if the mammograms and ultra sounds don't show anything what is the problem?
If you really feel there is something in your breast, go get a second opinion.

And you got your medical degree when?
Really, do what the docs say to do. There is an order that they go in for tests. If the mammogram shows something suspicious, then they recommend an ultrasound. If that is inconclusive, then it's generally a biopsy.
Don't rely on Internet information to second-guess their recommendations. Ask the dr. all the questions you like, but do what they say.
