I was mentally and emotionally abused by an alcoholic father. I was told that I was ugly and couldn't do anything right, etc. Everything I did was criticized and mocked. I was also isolated and told never to discuss family problems with anybody. What was in the family was supposed to stay there, thus protecting the guilty by my silence.
I would much rather have grown up in a happy, healthy environment, but I learned a lot from the experiences, too. I feel that it made me more sensitive to other people's feelings and quicker to stand up for someone who's being treated unfairly. I'm also very aware of the power of words to hurt and harm others, so I try to be positive and encouraging.
Too, we all have a mental tape running in our heads with voices from our past, whether loving or critical or angry. God silenced the critical voice of my earthly father and allowed me to overcome my fears so that I've been able to do pretty much whatever it is that I've set out to do. I was the first woman president of a club that was about 98% male. I've been a public speaker, I write and sing -- all things that I've been able to do because God has, is, and will continue to heal me of my fears.
All in all, God took the negative experiences of my childhood and made them into something good and positive -- both for myself and the benefit of others.

Because God lets something happen doesn't mean that he made it happen. You have to understand that. I have had some things happen to me in my lifetime that had no solution or escape. I had no way to get out of it. Sometimes we do have things in our lives that are awful, but the thing is that God CAN use them.
I was raped a year ago. I have told the story to several people that were victims and they were thrilled to hear they weren't alone and they COULD overcome the pain of it all with the help of God. The same can be said of a few other things that happened to me. God can use them to help other people. I've seen it happen. It doesn't mean God made the event happen, but it goes alone with scripture. Romans 8:28 says that he can and will use everything to his purposes.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NIV

hghostinme: Doesn't everyone sin? Your parents sinned why didn't you have a bad childhood? Why is it only certain people that have bad childhoods? Some of these children with bad childhoods it doesn't even have anything to do with the parents. Maybe the parents are poor and can't afford basic nutrition but the parents are doing their best. You are a stupid ignorant person. You make me really angry.

God's glory can shine even through those who have been taught to fear and conditioned to abuse.
Many people who have been abused are very sensitive to others; God's grace shines through them. We have a choice; to perpetuate the hatred, fear and rejection onto others, or to live as peacemakers, being balm for others, advising others, loving and forgiving. We can choose to reject God, or choose to believe in Him. It is difficult to believe God was with us when we were being hurt; those who do surrender are filled with so much grace!
Hard childhoods help others to understand the needs of those who have been abused who have not experienced abuse, therefore creating a kinder community and perhaps even drawing other souls into the glory of God's kingdom.
God did not create abuse, but allows it. He never takes the will of a soul from them. If someone's will is to reject some tenants of faith to misuse people, He will not stop it, but He will protect the innocent from spiritual death.
Many people I know who have been abused talk about some angel or some vision they had, where they were told they were loved and to trust in God. Some didn't even have religion in the home, didn't even know of Christ, yet were exposed in some way to Him by divine revelation or through someone else in the community.
the abused are joined to Christ's walk to calvary; the innocent being flogged, spit upon, cursed just as Christ was. There is purpose in suffering abuse; though God does not like it He allows it for the greater glory. Those who can overcome the affects of abuse can bring others into the kingdom by their love and concern for other souls. It strengthens us spiritually and even emotionally, those who have been abused can be very strong people and have a great impact on their community in positive ways.

God heals broken hearts. God heals wounded minds and troubled hearts. God teaches us to forgive because bitterness only makes us ill. Perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment. Christ is Perfect Love. God tells us that though father and mother forsake, He never will. He promises never to leave us or forsake us. God is our protection and provision so who should we fear? When God is for us, who can be against us? The wages of sin is death, but Christ came so we can have forgiveness of sins and life.
Sin comes down to four generations. Father drinks, son drinks, grandson drinks and great grandson drinks. Same with pornography, anger, fighting, killing, stealing, lying, etc.
We pass our sins to our children. Sometimes to see the sin in our child is when we stop the sin in ourselves. We reap what we sow.
God made everything and said it was good. Man brought sin into the world.

God thinks people are more entertaining when our lives are inherently unfair, just like I think sports are less entertaining when there's too much parody between teams.
