i have a mossberg 500A with a collapsible stock, forehand grip and side saddle and want to sell it but dont have to time to sell it on gunbroker or list it anywhere. Would i get decent payback for it at a dealer or would it be the same as if i go to a pawn shop?

As a Dealer I can tell you that you will always do better at a Gun Dealer than a Pawn shop. I take guns in on "consignment" for 30 day periods. The customer and I agree on a selling price, and the fee is established before the gun is put out for sale. I sell the firearm, take care of the paperwork and transfer, then the customer gets the agreed amount we agreed on before the firearm was sold..Simple..A Pawn shop will usually only give you 40% or sometimes less what a firearm is worth so to me that makes no sense. The only advantage is the cash changes hands quicker, but it costs the firearm owner a loss of a lot of money in the long run.. My stores policy is at the end of 30 days if the firearm hasn't sold, the customer gets his firearm back...No fee's......

NOTE* If you buy a firearm from a Pawn Shop. It's yours and you have no way to take it back even if it doesn't work or won't function. You might get a "good buy" but you better hope that it works because if it doesn't..you're stuck.....

A pawn shop is your WORST choice. Forget it!!! A dealer will give you a fair WHOLESALE price for your gun if he thinks it is something he can sell within a reasonable time. He is not likely to buy something for which there is little demand. Your best bet is to sell it yourself. Go to the library and look up a book called "The Blue Book of Gun Values" by S.P. Fjestad. Determine that accurate coindition fo your gun and then look up its value. What you should expect to get for it when selling to an individual is a price between that shown for its actual condition and the next lower condition. Let's say it is a Smith & Wesson Model 29 Classic in 98% condition. the Blue Book value for this gun in this condition is $375. The next lower condition is 95% and that price is $295. I'd expect to get about $335 for my gun. If you sell it to a dealer you would probably get about $200 to $220. A pawn shop might give you $165 for it but more like $150 in an outright sale. If you try to sell it to someone with a table at a gun show, you might get about what a pawn shop would give you but you could sell it to an individual at a gun show for the $335 that I said you could expect from an individual. You'd probably have to do a bunch of haggling at a gun show because everyone is looking for the bgest deal they can get. But before selling it at a gun show, go around and see what guns like yours are selling for at the show. You might be able to go up on your price or you may have to come down depending on what guns are selling for at the show.

If I'm not mistaken a Mossberg 500 is a pretty low end shot gun why not just keep it and add it to your collection? Is it broken? A jam monster? A POS? We're not talking a red label here you won't get anything near what you paid unless you find a sucker. If it works just keep it, if it doesn't unload it cheap and fast and chalk it up to a lesson learned.

Listen to JD. You best bet is to find a dealer who will take it on consignment (call around and ask about their policy and fees), next is to sell it to the dealer outright. A Pawn is the last, most desperate option that will get you cash today, but not much.

I usually figure 70-75% of what I paid for it is fair when I trade in guns with a dealer. If he tries to lowball me, I walk out the door.

no becasue they have to make a profit on it when they sell it so they will low ball you. i would take the extra time and list it myself and you probably could make 50-100 bucks more
