Of the Bible references to the body, John 2:19-21 makes reference to Jesus stating 'destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up', one of the lines which got him in trouble with the Jews. The doctrines that the body is a temple probably arose from that scenario, and is most likely why it is said in some religions that if you take your own life (deny or throw away what God has given you), then you will not go to heaven.
Examples of Despondency (hating your own life) in the Bible:
Moses, in Numbers 11:15
Joshua, in Joshua 7:7
Elijah, in 1Kings 19:4
Job, in Job 10:1
David, in Psalms 42:6
Jeremiah, in Jeremiah 15:10
The Disciples, in Luke 24:17

Suicides:
Saul in 1Samuel 31:4
Ahithophel, counsel to Absalom, in 2Samuel 17:23
Zimri in 1Kings 16:18
Judas Iscariot in Matthew 27:5

I have seen no reference to self-injury which is not associated with atonement for sins (self-lashing, wearing of sackcloth, etc.), as the writers may not have felt it necessary to focus on instabilities which would be a precursor to self-inflicted injuries.

keep in mind, all sin is is rebellion against God. i know it doesn't seem like self-injury would seem like a sin but I'm pretty sure it is a crime against yourself. it depends on whether your a Christian or not as to whether it is a sin. For unbelievers it is just one of the many by-products of a lost lifestyle.
...ok, happy kid made a most brilliant concession, if you are dying for the sins of the world then it is ok. Man you people and you're quickness to claim irony. wet paper bags, i tell ya.

In the Old Testament somewhere, it says not to harm your body for the dead or something like that. I think it's in Leviticus. But just hurting yourself for another reason other than grieving? I don't know. I've wondered the same thing.

In 1 Cor 3:16-17 says that we are "Temples of God" and as temples our bodies are sacred, that's why it is bad to salf injure yourself, if you read verse 17 carefully you will see that God promises a punishment for those who defile the Temple of God.

A big theme of Genesis is that God makes human beings the stewards of his creation, i.e. he puts us in charge of looking after the world he has created. We're part of the world, hence we have a duty to look after ourselves, which means not damaging ourselves for fun.

I don't know about sin, but I do know it's a sign of depression and that individual should seek medical attention.

"Your body is the temple of Christ". It is in the NT, I believe.
