I think people may have thought that the spirit of the person would haunt you or something.

My Mam says not to speak ill of the dead, because it's disrespectful. The thing is with me, I'm not going to be hypocrytical and be nice about someone I didn't like when they were alive. Like my great auntie died sometime last year, I think, and I didn't really like her that much because she wasn't really a nice person. Just because she's dead I'm not going to start being nice, because I don't think that's right.

I think of it this way, when a murderer is killed in the electric chair, do people start saying nice things about him?? I don't think so.

Many ancient peoples believed that the spirits of the dead continued to be active in their lives, so to speak evil of them would be to bring bad luck upon their family.

I think because the dead cannot defend themselves...

It's easy to speak ill of someone who can't offer a defense.

Well I think it's more of a respect issue, but it's possible some people thought the dead would come to haunt them if you talked bad about them.

I don't think it's a superstition at all, but simply common decency.
