It's not being held this year. Here's the message from their website:
United Melon Distributors will not be opening their Retail or Auction lot this year.
After 40 years of business, the tradition in downtown Los Angeles will go dark.

Oh, it's a lot of fun. Go on Alameda, near Chinatown. I have done this several times, and they change the location around, so just look for the signs. The prices are good, but you have to be ready to name your price FAST! They pull out a tree, name the height, and shake it out. If the shape and fullness look good to you, bid right away, or you will miss out. Watch for a couple of minutes to see how it goes, then dive in. I have gotten wonderful trees here for great prices.
I usually buy a tree a little taller than I need and get all my extra greens that way.

OH NO!!! I just read that post from the United Melon website (above). Bad news. That is the vendor who always did the auctions. Hmmm. Maybe go to the flower mart and see what's going on there? Or the produce mart?

Are these tress fully decorated and made of gold? Otherwise why waste your time? Go to a christmas tree farm and cut one down or buy one from a nursery.
