I know that with programs such as Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, approximately 95% of people who have lost a significant amount of weight regain it all back within a couple of years. I know that some people with gastric bypass surgery do regain all their weight back. I was wondering what that percentage is.

I am not considering bypass surgery, I am just curious about the regain rate. Not many people know that the regain rate for people on programs like Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig is around 95%. Once people lose alot of weight on these programs they are very motivated to keep it off but the biochemistry of the body makes it extremely difficult to keep the weight from creeping.

watched this on Oprah yesterday, seems 70% keep weight off but most patients turn their addiction to food to another addition such as alcohol, drugs, sex , etc.
the problem is from within that must be solved first be for trying a quick fix like this operation or it wont really work in the long haul to find peace of mind.

I can't give you an exact estimate but it's around 5 %. I do know 5 people personally (husbands family) who have had it done and they have all been very successful. I take it you are considering getting it done? I have done patient education on gastric bypass and it is a lifetime commitment to diet changes. Some people find ways around the stomach size such as eating very often, eating high fat foods instead of healthy choices. My mother in law has kept all of hers off (over 100 lbs) for 14 years and still enjoys a lot of the foods she did before. Hope this helps.

I don't know, but the risks out weigh any benefits with that.
I find the figure of 95% to be pretty high, I wonder if people gain it back on those programs because it is not the proper way to lose weight.
Eating healthy, exercise and drinking water are the ways to go. No starving, special prepared diets you buy and it's a life change you stick to, not go off of once you lose the weight.

I have had a couple of friends have the surgery and lost over 100 pounds...but then they had to have the next surgery to tighten and lift all the lose skins and saggy places. Both friends went through so much pain and spent lots of money because they had to pay for ti themselves. One still has that "unhealthy" look to her face. I wouldn't do it. And you are also right...95% of diets fail. I have lost weight with Isagenix (over 40 pounds) and love the program. Maybe ook at that and see if it an alternative for you.

I have a friend who had that done over 20 years ago and she still hasn't gained it back. At first, though, she said she had to make herself even eat one spoonful of food because she was never hunger. She weighed close to 400 pounds and now weighs about 160. She is 5'10", so that is not too much. The lowest she got was 150, so she has only gained 10 pounds in 20 years. Not too bad, huh?

I don't know exactly, but I work in a hospital that does these surgeries. I do sometimes see repeats.
check out these sites:
www.naturalcures.com
www.hcgdietinfo.com (several patients have cancelled their surgeries to follow this protocol - near 100% success - I'm going to try it when I get some $$$ next month. Yahoo has an hcg diet group.)

I had this done for medical reasons -- not by choice and it is a definite life style change. Its been 2 years and I am still eating small meals, have gained 7 lbs with much effort, I used to enjoy eating, now not so much as that is what I do all day it seems ---and cannot drink liquids with my meals - sounds like fun huh - consider very carefully!!!

I can't tell you percentages, but three of my cousins all had the procedure. All three women and over 400 pounds. They are all under 150 pounds now and have been that way for years. It worked for them, and I can tell you they were big all there lives.

Why risk surgery? Eat a vegan diet and you will be super healthy and stay thin. That's what I do. =)
Read the book Skinny B*tch.
Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers are worthless!
