I was about to say "The Golden Compass" just to be a smart-***.
However, I don't think it's possible to pick one. Everyone has different tastes and interests.
I happen to like Arthur Deikman's _The Wrong Way Home_, but that's because I think that understanding and resisting group manipulation is an important topic in my view. I think it's an important book, but I don't think it's the greatest ever written. Perhaps a work of fiction would fit that category... like the Odyssey, for example.
If you were to ask "What's the greatest book ever written about _____" or "in XYZ genre," then it would be a lot easier to answer.

Hi, Belzebot-the greatest book ever written is the book that will encourage one to read, think for oneself, and question what has always been presented as incontrovertible fact. I personally think anything by Robert Heinlein should be way up there on the list-p&l, best wishes for a happy holiday season to you and yours.

Maybe not the "greatest book ever written" but one that has dramatically affected my life, and how I see the world, is George Orwell's "1984."

The Qu'ran. I know you may sigh and think 'what the hell' but have you read it? The Quran challenges anyone to create a verse like it and no one has till thid day. Science till this day cannot prove anything wrong with the facts that the Qu'ran has stated. such as the creation of a baby, the creation of life, how the to oceans water never mix etc. These facts were in the Qu'ran 1400 years ago when man had no knowledge of these things.
No harm in taking a look!

For cryin' out loud with the thumbs down already! The question is for peoples' opinions. If your choice isn't their choice, so freakin' what?! Can't you save your thumbs down for people who are acting like jerks, instead of just having a different opinion than yours? If you're doing it just to be irritating, it's working!!
