You can't tell if a person is crazy or not. I'm sure your parents tell you to stay away from people that look like Manson, but Dahmer and Ted Bundy seemed normal and good looking and they were mass murderers. It must be hard not to get all freaked out about not suspecting someone you know was a murderer, just thank god you're O.K.
I guess you would have to know someone from childhood to be sure they're normal. But, there are some very manipulative, violent 10 year olds in my son's grade that have learned how to act all polite in front of the teachers. I wonder if I'll they'll be in jail someday or able to get away with crimes. My mother asked if they're just the Eddy Hascal types..what@#? Because I'm in a nice neighborhood, she doesn't understand what i'm going through. The violent video games are bringing out the (genetic) worst in kids.
Although, I have noticed that the neighbors with the worst taste in clothes, decorating..ect have turned out to be manipulative liars and their children are bullies....hmmm. I don't want to get to know them and what their other problems are. Then the neighbor with a mild Tourettes is the nicest, coolest person with the best judgement and taste, because it's just a physical problem. Her muscles just get tense on days when she didn't get enough sleep and combined with coffee. But the neighbors saw it once and are staring and lying and deflecting attention away from their weird families. Ha, Ha (not funny). She doesn't have O.C.D. or copralalia (swearing) and never has needed to see a psychiatrist (doesn't need a prescription). I told her don't worry about it you don't want to be their friend, they're the type that'll stab you in the back someday. But is is a shame that the other ladies "fit in" more, even though they admit to taking Prozac and having bad taste. And they have money to buy boring clothes from Lands End catalogue and appear to be normal (at first).
Our society has T.V., which can provide enough tips for the mentally ill to "fit in" and magazines give fashion tips.... A lot of people take medication on and off. Maybe you knew the murderer when he was on his medication, that's how he fooled you. I hope you get over this shocking revelation soon.

I can only speak to bi-polar Mood Disorders. You wouldn't be able tell . When a person is taking medications on a regular bases and with the right combinations, they become stable. If a bi-polar needs meds, he would swing between to two poles swinging from highs and lows, sometimes within minutes, hours, or days.
I think if you couldn't tell whether the person was schizophrenia or not, it is difficult to spot it. I do remember that this lady who worked for me was like a monkey going bananas, and I thought it was the way she was, and later I met her at a store, and told me she was diagnosed as bi-polar, and yes she was calm. I hope you don't become paranoid about your terrible experience. You can find perpetrators of crime among people who don't have a mental illness, too

some people are on meds that make them seem normal and you would not know they have any illness at all or it may be mild i see a dr for depression but you wouldnt tell i seem to be very happy and cheerful but on the inside i can be very sad and at times very angry and hateful my best friend is schiophrenic and multiple personality disorder and you can definately tell with her she has anxiety attacks and very bad mood swings so it just varies if you can tell or not if a person has mental problems or not

Miserable feelings with inability to manage ones own affairs are the principle maladies of mental patients.Deviant behaviours such as excessive aloofness, excessively shy or angry, are also mental abnormalities. Besides, gross symptoms such as delusion, hallucination, abnormal and irrational fears ,depression, excitements of long standing nature- all reflect severe mental disorders(Psychosis).Inability to love(both giving and taking),and work( both put together, not any one of love or work)--inability to love and work is another simple definition of people with serious mental problem!
