Depends what the rebels are fighting for. If they believe that the government has become too powerful, too intrusive, and too authoritarian, then it's time to join the revolution.

In the socio-political setup we have now it is simply not possible to have a classic CSA vs USA war.It is possible to have a insugency based rebellion. It would start out looking a lot like the late 60's war protester movement. It would have to be a issue that a large portion of the population could get behind to the point of being willing to go against the national guard soldiers which is where the "fighting" would start.the next phaze would look a lot like the worst of the IRA years in northern ireland. At this point the rebellious group would start winning posts in congress. A victory would be essentually winning enough seats in congress or a change in national law to accomidate the issue at hand.
Another possibilitiy is a repeat of 1930's german history with Naziism. We as americans think of ourselves as being smarter than the germans in this respect and maybe so but i bet if you polled the germans in 1925 they would say they are to civilized to fall for something like the nazi movement.
As far as joining the army to fight the rebellion.Depends on the cause.there are things wrong with this country that need fixed in a bad way but 230 plus years of entrenchment of this government makes this difficult if not impossible under the current way of things.your question is flawed in this sense if the cause is just and correct then i would have to decide based on this and also wheather the end would justify the means and realistic hope of getting the end result desired, without losing so much as to make the eventual victory too hollow.
