Now: belief in God is not enough, though. There is an old saying-"It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you're sincere."
And that is fine, as far as it goes.
But-outside of a true SPIRITUAL change, there is absolutly NOTHING that CAN get you into heaven, outside of that.
Sincerity alone is not enough to get you into Heaven. There has to be SPIRITUAL change that has to happen to a person.
This is what is know as being BORN AGAIN.
Now, that phrase is very confusing to many people. Basically, it means that a person has to:
1. Admit that they are a sinner
2. Repent, (that is:cry out to Jesus that you regret that you have sinned, to admit that there is nothing that you can do will earn His favor, & you need to be forgiven)
3. Ask for His forgivness
And MOST IMPORTANTLY , ask Jesus, (by the power of the Holy Spirit), to come into your life, to rule your life, & to change you into the person that HE wants you to be.
You may be familiar with this, but is important that I know that you are indeed Born Again, before we can proceed further.
The change into the new person that God needs you to be is talked about in:
2 Corinthians 5:17 (New International Version)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
This & this alone is what starts a person on a true BIBLICAL walk with Christ.

Born Again? Very good question, and not surprised that you're confused. This term comes from John chapter 3, Jesus speaking to Nicodemus: "Do not marvel when I say to you, you must be born again..." (John 3:7). A more literal translation of the Greek would be: "you all must be born from above." It has come to characterize Christians who have undergone a personal conversion experience. The question remains whether or not this new birth is something that the believer must consciously feel. Traditional Christian Churches such as the Roman Catholics, Orthodox, later the Lutheran, and Anglican (and Methodist) believed that baptism of infants was sufficient to confer the grace of salvation upon the person. Anabaptists, for example, questioned this and said that only adult believers should be baptized as an act of their own free will. Most modern day Evangelical churches follow this practice. Pentecostalism is somewhat different from both traditional Protestantism and contemporary Evangelicalism. This is because of their belief in a second Baptism--that of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes they view speaking in tongues as the "evidence" of this Baptism. This doctrine has caused more division than it ought to, but the belief in the second indwelling of Christ is something that has been uncomfortable for a lot of Christians for some time. It's possible that this experience is what the Wesleys were after. Their revivalist movement was called "Methodism" because they seemed to have a method to getting people saved and then sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit. They can be understood as precursors to the modern day Pentecostal revival that was sparked at Asuza Street in Los Angeles in the early 1900's. It was at an AME (African Methodist Episcopal) church that a preacher named William Seymour led the revivals that came to be called Pentecostalism. Your question underscores the unfortunate, but very real divide that exists in today's Evangelical Christians between the Charismatic (another term loosely meaning Pentecostal) and the Fundamental (those who are strongly Bible based but deny any miraculous powers are given to the believer). An example would be Oral Roberts (Charismatic healer) vs. Billy Graham (dynamic, but not "Charismatic," preacher). The emphasis on being born again would be more Fundamental, while the Pentecostals would urge the believer to be "filled with the Holy Spirit." An example of a strongly Fundamental but anti-Charismatic institution would be the Dallas Theological Seminary. Some people would disagree with this characterization of "Fundamental," by I think its accurate. I'd much rather preach to you the scriptures; but I remember my days of seeking answers, and I just wanted some basic information. Yours in Christ, Nick

As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He said "...Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again...." (John 3:3-7).
The phrase "born again" literally means "born from above." Nicodemus had a real need. He needed a change of his heart--a spiritual transformation. New birth, being born again, is an act of God whereby eternal life is imparted to the person who believes (2 Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; 1 Peter 1:3; 1 John 2:29; 3:9; 4:7; 5:1-4, 18). John 1:12,13 indicates that "born again" also carries the idea "to become children of God" through trust in the name of Jesus Christ

It is when a person trusts in Jesus Christ's finished work on the cross as payment for the penalty of their sins.
The person who has trusted in Christ turns away from their former life, and gives it to Christ. In return, the Holy Spirit comes into the believer and guides them in a life dedicated to Christ.
This believer is "born again" (or born from above). The Spirit within them comes alive, where it was once dead. The first birth they had was of the flesh. The second birth is of the Spirit.

Jesus told him:“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3
“Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. John 3:5
Everyone is already born of water. The water birth is from your mother on this earth. The water birth is not talking about being baptized by your preacher. Baptism is a symbol of what Jesus does. The spiritual birth is being baptized by Jesus with His Holy Spirit.
This is what happens when one is born again:
Then I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God. Ezekiel 11:19

It means that I asked Jesus to come into my life, take away the old me that was full of sin, and create within me a new person. Just as if I had become as a baby again, my soul became "born again" and I have a fresh start in this life with Jesus leading the way for me.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
To be "in Christ" is to be born-again. That happens when one places their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus. New spiritual life is created and relationship with God is established. That one is now free from the penalty of sin. As one grows in the grace and knowledge of Christ he/she becomes free from the power and practice of sin. Finally, the saved person will one day pass from this life and will be free from the presence of sin. That is glorification.
