My honest opinion would be use Xp pro as your operating system, Vista is very processor heavy and buggy, also issues with hardware and software. Xp is still in use in business's and schools for a reason, as for your browser use Firefox http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/ much more secure than ie and faster go and grab Fasterfox add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1269 Hope this helps.

Be careful on who you listen to. People who have problems more than likely didn't check their computer to make sure it is fully compatible (or they are mac fan-boys, one of the two). To check go to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
and download the upgrade advisor. It will tell you if your computer can run it and which version you should buy. When you upgraded to EI7 did you do it from Windows Update? If not, uninstall and then run the updater. Dido even if you used the updater the first time.
I also have a 2004 Gateway with IE7 and dual booting XP and Vista Premium. So far Vista is better than XP. My boot time with XP is 3min while for Vista it's 45sec and less than 5sec from sleep. Problems have been minimal. If the upgrade advisor says your computer can run Vista, I would suggest upgrading.

I've been running Vista since it was first available and have had no problems. It is a very good OS. But, there is a service pack coming for XP, and I think I would wait for that before I made the move to Vista. They say this new service pack (SP3) contains some very impressive improvements, one of which speeds the program up quite a bit.

No, you should not DOWNgrade to Vista. You could wait for the first service pack it'll get early next year. But XP will get it's third service pack and reports so far say it's going to be good and will boost XP's performance quite a bit.
