They were Jewish. They were subject to Mosaic law (10 commandments) They went to synagogue. They made offerings to The one true God of Abraham. They were not Islamic under any circumstances. Before the prophet Muhammad formed Islam they worshiped all sorts of man made Gods. For anyone to think otherwise means they need to study a little harder.

before Christ they were Jews
Luke 2:22-33
22When the time of their purification according to the Law of Moses had been completed, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord
23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, "Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord"

24and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: "a pair of doves or two young pigeons."

25Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
26It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's Christ.
27Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,
28Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29"Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you now dismiss your servant in peace.
30For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31which you have prepared in the sight of all people,
32a light for revelation to the Gentiles
and for glory to your people Israel."

33The child's father and mother marveled at what was said about him

After Christ they convert to Christianity.

Act 1:13-14
13When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.
14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Practitioners of Judaism, most likely of the following of the Pharisees teachings and interpretations of the Scriptures since Mary's brother-in-law was a priest.

To consider them followers of their son, which I think you are leading on to, probably did not occur until Jesus began His ministry or after His resurrection; possibly ruling out Joseph as a "Christian" altogether.

Luke 2
49"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?" 50But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

Jewish, Jesus was a Jew also.

How do we know Jesus was a Jew and so where His parents? It's obvious. Here are the clues....

He lived at home till he was 30
Went to work for His father
He thought His mother was a virgin
and she thought He was God.

Now I pray God has a sense of humor, or I just stepped in deep doo doo.

EDIT:
I believe in God and also that He has a sense of humor. I mean He has to, look at the duck billed platypus for example as humor in creation.

They were of the tribe of Judah in blood, but according to my research, they were islamic monotheist, because they worshipped ONE GOD, as did abraham, issac, moses, and all of the other prophets.
