Yes animals feel sad and yes they mourn. When I had to put my mastiff to sleep because of a highly painful, fatal disease my other dog moped for weeks. He didn't want to eat, lost weight and wouldn't play. When he became a bit less depressed we brought home another puppy and he became happier after that.

Human animals do, yes.

Other animals appear to be sad sometimes, too, and there is a lot of very good evidence that they have emotions like we do, but we can't prove *with absolute certainty* what they feel. Heck, I can't prove with absolute certainty what YOU feel. We just have to read your actions and take your word for it.

Koko, the gorilla that learned sign language, signed "Koko sad" in response to her kitten's death. Lots of pet owners have noticed their animals' different emotions, too.

Yes, that's why the photos of animals in shelters are always so sad looking because they're depressed. They don't have a lap to rest their heads on. :-(

If by sad you mean a bit depressed -- the answer is yes.

I have many dogs. When one dies or is given away, the rest become very quiet and take time to return to their normal happy routine.

They also seem aware of of who are related to them and are particularly affected when someone closer to them is missing for a few hours.

Yes. Anyone that has kept dogs, for instance, can see sadness often displayed in the extreme. They also recognize when people they know are sad.

I once reprimanded my dog for leaping on the bed, she walked out of the room. When I called her back at bedtime, she didn't come in and stayed out of the room the whole night, moping under the table. So I guess she felt offended and decided to punish me by snobbing me.

Animals can mourn themselves to death. I think animals are capable of deeper emotions than man. Man is too much about logic and reason. Animals are pure instinct and emotion.
