Man has always been curious about his existence. For a highly evolved creature, we have a brain that actually makes it difficult some times to just enjoy being at the top of the food chain. So we came up with my ideas. I would say theories but that would imply a hypothesis that had been proved. Anyway, the separation in societies and the fact that people often wonder these things led to different cultures inventing different Gods. The only problem is that all of the Gods are very, very human. You can tell this by they appearance and the writings that are supposedly their words.

Some people just have to believe something even if it just brings about more questions...

Because religion is a social institution. There are many different cultures in the world, and no single religion would suit every community or every individual's tastes. Look at ancient societies; agricultural people and farming societies worshipped agricultural gods. Hunting tribes mainly worshipped hunting gods. Warlike tribes preferred to worship war gods, and so forth. Some societies worshipped various combinations of all three, depending on what they considered important for sustaining their livelihoods.

"Mongo not know, Mongo just pawn in game." (Mel Brooks--Blazing Saddles)

Sorry, Just kidding.

I think the main reasons are:

1. People lived all over the world and were isolated from each other. Thousands of years ago, they didn't have TV, the Internet, or fax machines to compare notes and spread ideas.

2. Some sort of elite group would be put in charge of interpreting religious matters. Some rebellious people would say "Who put these guys in charge?" and go off to start their own groups.

I would think because man was much more isolated in ancient times. People didn't travel all around the world like we do today. Just like why are there so many languages.
