Our dog we rescued has 3 mth old puppies. She was already pregnant. We want to get her fixed, of course. But was our vet said 5 mths after delivering pups. Our male dog is sniffing ALOT and tried to mount her. I called our vet again and they are not open. I am planning on scheduling her for the surgery ASAP. But was curious how soon do they usually go into heat. I do not want to leave them outside alone, if there is a chance she coule be in heat!! She is a lab.
Thank You!!

They will go back in heat about 4 months after the pups are born now would be a good time to go ahead and get her fixed

It is possible she is coming into heat.
a dog comes into heat on an average every 6 months.
Now figure she is in heat for about 2 weeks when she was bred, carried teh pups for about 2 months and tehn you say they are 3 months old that means it's been about 5 1/2 months since teh last heat. Very good chance she is coming in soon if not possibly already in heat.
Make sure you keep them seperated, she can be spayed when in heat a,d why not go ahead and get the male done as well. He can smell a female in heat upto 5 miles away and he will get out to get to her if he really wants to and giving him the sent from your female is only going to get him wanting to go travel.

They usually go back into heat 4-6 months after delivering,,,but 3 months after puppies is not unusual. I would definitely keep them seperated until you can get her spayed. Tell the vet that she seems to be coming into heat now,,and you can't wait. I would think about another vet,,,,I can't imagine one suggesting to wait 5 months after puppies. They usually want to spay after puppies are weaned.

ADD...a urinary infection in a female dog can also mimic heat to a male, so you may want to have that checked too.

They will usually go into another heat 6 months from the last heat they were in. doesn't matter if she had pups or not.

So if you count back to when she had the pups then approx 63 days back from when she was mated then she could go into another heat soon. Have you checked her vulva to see if perhaps she is leaking some fluid that is off color or smells foul? I would think that an infection may be setting in rather than another heat. In any case the vet is wrong and I'd seek another vets opinion on this as soon as you can ok.

I'm not sure, but its soon. If her pups are 3 months old then she's more than likely ready again. Do not let your male near her, and get him neutered as well! Males are just as important to get fixed as females, possibly more!

Good luck!
