No there isn't. 80GB was supposed to be "software backwards compatibility" but it turns out it still had "some" PS2 chips inside. 40GB doesn't have those chips so it can't be made backwards compatible.

If you get a PS3 make sure you don't get duped into buying an obsolete Sixaxis as a second controller.
