You live together. Do you list each other as operators on your own policies? You need to do that. Then you're covered.

YOUR policy has an exclusion in it, for any non-scheduled, household vehicle - that's his. His policy has the same exclusion.

Just cross-list each other as operators.

For California, most companies require that ALL individuals residing within the household be either listed as a covered driver or they are to be specifically EXCLUDED off your policy. If your boyfriend is driving your vehicle and is not listed on the policy as a covered driver and causes an accident your insurance company could deny the claim.

A solution would be to have you and your vehicle added to his policy (or vice versa) and then cancel your policy so you now only have one insurance bill for the both of you two and will be able to receive 'multi-car" benefits which help lower your premiums and now you will both be covered on each others vehicle.

Consult with your respective insurance broker or agent for coverage limitations, restrictions and exclusions on your current policy and also if they can work a rate for you both on one policy. Best of luck to you!

Obviously, in some areas, the car is covered rather than the driver. This is NOT true everywhere. Your best answer would come from yours and his insurance companies. I am covered in any vehicle I drive. Anyone over 25 that drives my cars are covered. No one (including family members) under 25 is covered. Persons under 25 must be added to my policy. Think about it. If the car was covered and not individual drivers, how many dollars per year would insurance companies lose?

In the U.S. it is actually the car that is insured though typically insurance companies cover you if you drive other cars as well. (Liability belongs to the owner of the car rather than the driver - the owner could in turn seek damages from the driver.)

Since you both have insurance you are covered. It is possible the insurance companies would argue over which one should pay in the event of accident.

In insurance you typically declare "primary" and "other drivers". If you live together and drive his car on a regular basis and vice versa you should probably declare each other as "other drivers" on your policies for your own cars just avoid hassles later.

Better yet if you live together and plan to do so indefinitely you should get a single insurance policy for both cars listing both of you as drivers. Insurance for a 2nd car on a policy is typically cheaper than two separate policies.

As long as you have a standard or preferred company, yes.

Check with your agent to see if you are in a preferred line.
