It is difficult to house train a puppy ( No poo or pee in the house ) unless someone is with it all the time. If you are insisting on a puppy... it probably won't be happening. However, an older dog from a shelter may be already house and obedience trained...and your parents might consider a dog like this. Ask them. A dog is a tremendous responsibility... they can live for up to twenty years...so it's like adopting a brother or sister. If you are fifteen... you might have to leave home soon for school or work or service; you need to ask yourself what would happen to your dog then. If your parents WANTED a dog...you would have one. Think first about what would be best for the dog. If you want to BE with dogs, you can volunteer some of your free time at the local shelter...cleaning up and exercising lots of dogs! Good luck to you.

A dog does not need someone there ALL the time, however, housetraining a puppy does require more time and attention than you or your parents can give it. You will only be in sixth form for -- how many years? Then you will be leaving home for more education or to work -- your dog will still be there. And whether you take the dog or it stays with your parents, no one will be home all day. Dogs live for 8 to 16 or more years, depending on the breed, and you have to plan for its whole life.

One solution is to hire a dog-sitter to come to your home once a day (for puppies twice at least). That can get expensive.

To be near dogs, can you walk a neighbor's dog, or volunteer at a vet's office or shelter? There are other ways to enjoy dogs without having one at home.

I personally dont think that not being home all the time is a good reason for not getting a dog. My parents have said the same thing to me and my brother for years now. We got a dog last summer(good time that ill explain later) and unfourtunetly it did not work out. But not being home is not a good reason.

I personally think that the best time to get a dog is in the summer or during a long school vacation. Preferably a time where you, as the owner, have a lot of time to train a dog so that when school does come back in session you and your parents will be able to trust that the dog does not need supervision while on its own. When we did this with our dog it worked out great. We could leave for school and trust that everything would be the same when we got home.

No you are right i got my dog in the same situation but my dad didn't want a dog and my dog doesn't need anyone there constantly i have a dog and weekdays she is home for at least 7 hours even tho it is said we make it threw and something you can do if you get one open crate train her which we did so she can go around the house with all the doors closed so she is safe and she can get water and food she it is easy to go to school but if your gone alot get a small dog and get a lazy dog you don't have to but then you can go to work or school and feel good no worys i have a shiz tzu and she is lazy and she loves everyone and when she wants to play at the end it is worth it i love her and my family does i recommend a shiz tzu for your situation

Take a poll on here about how many people have dogs vs how many work or go to school. Then show the results to your parents. The average person isn't able to be at home 24/7 with their animals, and their dogs are perfectly happy without a babysitter all of the time.

It depends on the dog and how old it is. If you have a dog door and a kennel on the other side so the dog can get out for potties, it can work. A puppy needs a safe place to be when unsupervised. Some puppies will eat the house in a very short amount of time.

Personally, if I were you, I'd wait and get my own dog after growing up and moving out.

Most of us here are not lucky enough to be able to stay at home all the time. Well trained dogs do not need 24/7 supervision. Possibly your parents aren't ready for all the extra responsibility of training, caring for, cleaning up after, and keeping a dog healthy, which requires paying the vet bills. Have you had conversations about who is going to be the primary caregiver? Are they convinced that you can handle all of that? Maybe you could have a discussion about all the things dog ownership involves and reassure them that you are able to do this without much effort on their part.

If you have a dog right from a baby, then someone has to be there to let him out regualry so he can go for a wee and a poo. Otherwise he will get into the habbit of doing it anywhere. Also a dog needs fresh water and needs to be taken for walks but the length depends on the size of the dog.

it sounds like they just don't want to deal with a dog.. they are a lot of work and can be very expensive.. and while you sound very mature for your age, you will be going to college in a few years and they will be in charge of the care of the dog.. enjoy your cat and when you move out get a dog of your own..

my dog likes alone time, she curls up in her crate or on the couch and sleeps..

if you want to enjoy dogs in the meantime do some volunteering at an animal shelter or help to train working dogs (seeing eye dogs).. you will get to enjoy time with dogs and not have the expense and will be doing some nice volunteer work
