Violence as a way of (wrongly and sinfully) spreading religious belief did not get into Christian organisations until the 4th century - when the political powers got involved from the time of Constantine (roughly speaking). So it represents an aberration from Christ's teaching. All the apostles and early church leaders just used persuasion and the deeds of the Holy Spirit - miracles of healing, for instance. Eg Paul was a violent man until he became a christian, after which he became entirely peaceful.
Islam gets characterised as spread by the sword because
1) Mohammed did not use just persuasion. He fought 27 battles, I have heard (haven't verified details, but he did enforce people to accept him as Allah's prophet through violent means as well as persuasion).
2) Mohammed's successors - the first 4 caliphs - conquered by force Iraq, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Judah, and North Africa. They did not force Islam on inhabitants but did seize political control by aggression.
Probably most people have converted out of self-interest - eg decreased taxation adnd not being barred from positions of office. Even so there was this, in my opinion, totally ungodly, initial use of violence. And of course there is the nasty apostasy law in Sharia, also very ungodly.

Many social studies textbooks for students show the image of an Arab
horseman carrying a sword in one hand and the Quran in the other
conquering and forcibly converting. This, though, is not a correct
portrayal of history. Islam has always given respect and freedom of
religion to all faiths. The Quran says: "God forbids you not, with
regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out
of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God
loveth those who are just. 60:8)
Freedom of religion is laid down in the Quran itself: "There is no
compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right
direction is distinctly clear from error". (2:256) Christian
missionary, T.W. Arnold had this opinion on his study of the question
of the spread of Islam: ".. of any organized attempt to force the
acceptance of Islam on the non-Muslim population, or of any
systematic persecution intended to stamp out the Christian religion,
we hear nothing. Had the caliphs chosen to adopt either course of
action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as
Ferdinand and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV made
Protestanism ..."
It is a function of Islamic law to protect the privileged status of
minorities, and this is why non-Muslim places of worship have
flourished all over the Islamic world. History provides many
examples of Muslim tolerance towards other faiths: when the caliph
Omar entered Jerusalem in the year 634, Islam granted freedom of
worship to all religious communities in the city. Proclaiming to the
inhabitants that their lives, and property were safe, and that their
places of worship would never be taken from them, he asked the
Christian patriarch Sophronius to accompany him on a visit to all the
holy places. Islamic law also permits non-Muslim minorities to set up
their own courts, which implement family laws drawn up by the
minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in an
Islamic state are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or
not.
Racism is not a part of Islam, the Quran speaks only of human equality
and how all peoples are equal in the sight of God. "O mankind! We
created you from a single soul, male and female, and made you into
nations and tribes, so that you may come to know one another. Truly,
the most honored of you in God's sight is the greatest of you in
piety. God is All-Knowing, All- Aware. (49:13)

I believe that in the beginning, Christianity was spread by the example of the martyrs. These were ordinary people who were killed because they did not believe what others believed. They did not do violence to other people in the process. They hurt no one. It is true that certain Christian emperors used coercion to spread Christianity, and assert their brand of Christianity on others. This is a sad commentary on Christian history.

Christianity was spread primarily by preaching the gospel, like it should have been, and by the roman government, who made it a state religion. The crusades were just a response to Muslim invasion of the holy land.
I think Islam grew over the centuries, mainly because they have huge families.

Have patience my brother in faith.
Either they are ignorant or are telling us white lies, as if, we have never read the Bible.
Religions are not spread by sword, not even by words ---- they are spread by recognition of Truth.
1.7 Billion Faithful out there & yet more are embracing Islam every other day. These are those who recognise the TRUTH and are steadfast in their beliefs towards One unseen God, All-mighty.
Nonetheless, what all the accusers are trying to do is to extinguish the Light of God by the words of their mouth.... God has already explained it in Koran.... they will never be able to do it.
Peace on you and do not you get disturbed... life's like that!

It's because islam lives in complete denial about the use of violence to spread their religion (it's still happening today), whereas christianity is well aware of violent times in its past.
Until islam accepts the violence it has done and continues to do it will never be a 'peaceful' religion.

You should have a look at the present situation. By which means democracy is spread? Is it by preaching or what. This is how it shall be, this is how it will continue to be.
