The major difference is the backwards compatability of the systems. The 60GB is the BEST as it has every original features.

$400.00:
Hard Drive: 40GB
USB Ports: 2
Colors: Black, White(Asia Only)
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Reader: No
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: No
PS2 Compatibility: 0%

$500.00
Hard Drive: 60GB
USB Ports: 4
Colors: Black
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Readers: Yes
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: Yes
PS2 Playback: 98%

$600.00
Hard Drive: 80GB
USB Ports: 4
Colors: Black
Wi-Fi: Yes
Flash Card Reader: Yes
Chrome Trim: Yes
SACD Playback: Yes
PS2 Playback: 70-80%

They can all play PS1 games though. Also, the 80GB and 40GB versions produce less heat from its CPU. Less heat, quieter fan, slightly cheaper electric bill.

In the 40GB and 80GB the only differences other than HDD size is that the 80GB is about 70% percent backwards compatible and the 40GB is not. The 60GB is the way to go if you can get ahold of one because they are roughly 100% backwards compatible and are even rumored to play PS1 games as well. Sony manufactured the 40GB and 80GB with cheaper and less powerful processing components where the original 60GB has the powerful processors.

40gb One has not "Sony Emotion Engine" which is the Ps2 components but besides that it has no emulator to play the Ps2 games so no PS2 games on the 40gb one, it has 2 less usb's so you have 2., it has no memory card reader SD card etc those thigns you put in phones etc.
80gb one has got everything but no "Emotion Engine" but it does have an emaulator for PS2 games but you will need the internet to update to atleast Firmware 1.6 to play them and about 1,600 out of 2,800 are compatible with some of the rest having patches etc or not playable but everything else is the same; 4USB,Memory card reader.
60gb one has the same as 80gb + the Emotion engine meaning all ps2 games can be played it has 4USB and memory card reader.
And remember all 3 models can play Psone games.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

well they stopped making 60gb-but i think this would be the best cause of the backwards compatiblity
40gb-you dont have backward compatiblitiy
80gb-is more expensive and you have backward compatibilty
