The infamous cliche, " I love you but I'm not in love with you" is it true or just a cop out on someone ending a relationship.

it's a cop out..it means they've finished the relationship with you but are finding it hard to cut off their caring feelings but that will go anyway..i dislike that kind of cowardice don't you? My ex told me he had loved me after we split..i just said well i don't love you anymore goodbye..i get fed up of games

Not sure really - I do think there is a difference between being in love and loving someone though. Tough one.

I actuly think its true, you can love someone so much but thery're only a friendly love or you can be 'IN' love with someone so much it hurts!
Like, you love your parents,siblings,friends etc but obviously your not 'IN' love with them are you.
Hope this helps :-}
