I took the tick out but I'm not sure or now if I got the tick's head out. How can I tell and if I didn't how can I get the head out??? Please help me & my dog!!!!

Oh and we set the tick on fire when I got it out.

Look where the tick was attached. The head, if it's still attached, will look sort of like a piece of black pepper. Use a pair of tweezers to pull it out. Keep an eye on the spot, too, to make sure there's no infection, although if you got it all out, there probably won't be.

You could have just squashed the tick you know, you didn't have to burn it, they squash easily!!

The head isn't left in as often as people think. If you twisted as you pulled you should be ok. You'll know if the mouth parts are still in there if the dog gets a little granuloma (area of infection/swelling) around where the tick was, in which case show a vet so they give you something to get rid of it. Granulomas have to be surgically removed sometimes. I've only seen on in four years as a result of improper tick removal though - some dick had tried to burn a tick off his dog with a cigarette.

i agree with drb and the next time it happens take some alchol (like whiskey or something) put it in a shot glass or just a small glass flip it over on the tick so it basically just drowns the tick, the tick basically gets drunk and pulls its head out, works on humans too!
