I am trying to make my background a layer and it says in the instructions to click the background twice in the layer pallette to unlock it. Whenever I click it twice though, it doesn't unlock it.

Instead of it saying "background" on the layer pallett, it says "Index".

If you could please help me out, that would really be great.

You double click the layer name in the Layers Palette

This opens the New Layer dialog (don't worry about that).

The default name will be Layer 0.

Just click OK.

The Background layer has now been renamed and is unlocked.

Just make a duplicate of the background layer. Right click on the layer and click duplicate layer.... It will be unlocked. If it is not...then unlock it.

I additionally am new to Photoshop yet i think of which you won't be able to launch a history layer. What you are going to be able to desire to do is to reproduction the history and then launch the reproduction and artwork on that.
