The "black" referres to the technology, and equipmet inside the box! Black also referres to the "mysterious" appearance of something that does not have to be there to "make the plane fly". But "last but not least" it is also referered to as a "tattle tale"- becasue it tells everything you did - even well before the airplane went down! This is used to re-construct the flight to try and figure out what went wrong!!

The reason it is painted orange, is bacause it is easier to find it -(this color also referred to as "yummy orange" by navy pilots). ---- It makes people in water easier to see too! (Remember there are sharks there!)

If the black box is orange to call it an orange box would be misleading. Some damned fool would go around looking for something with fruit in it. If it is orange, why not call it an orange crate?

Black box is indeed electronics terminology. It basically means any appliance whose function is known, but how it accomplishes the function is not known, doesn't need to be known, or is unimportant for the task at hand.

We (EEs) even use 'blackbox' as a verb, as in 'Since I know your subcircuit design has been verified correct, I'm going to blackbox it when I do the verification of the parent circuit which incorporates multiple copies of your subcircuit,' for example.

They should call it a pink box, cause after an accident/incident, the conversation in the cockpits usually end with a "pink slip".

The name black box was derived from the device being burned and charred black after the crash.

i dont care what colour you call it, because the knowing people call it FDR and CVR.

OK:) it is too widespread terminus technicus /the blackbox/, and like many people in different questions answered, it would actually be black anyway, from the soot and ash from the crash site.
