My father was serving in the Army. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor at the Schofield Barracks. I would like to honor him with this posting. Below is the link to a story published in the Naples Daily News in his honor.

Grampa was in the Navy and at Pearl Harbor. He was downtown in a Hotel when the attack hit. A destroyer he had just finished supervising a refit on was hit by a bomb while still in dry-dock. He was due to leave the next morning to come back to the states, but wound up staying for three more months doing salvage and recovery. He spent the rest of the war supervising refits on destroyers. He didn't like to talk about it much, because he could hear the men trapped below decks banging on the metal, hoping to be rescued. Some were rescued, but others just got quiet. I can't remember which Battleship he was trying to rescue people on, but he said it capsized, and I never knew which one did what. I know Arizona took a bomb and exploded, it pretty much just sank.

My father was stationed in Pearl Harbor also -- he was in the Army Air Corp. Luckily he was not on the base at the time. Yes I think honoring our ancestors is a great idea, although I do believe that it was 66 years ago not 67 years ago.

My father was a merchant seaman. My half-brother was standing with his duffle bag at Schofield Barracks waiting for a bus to take him to the Aloha Pier in Honolulu and then to Fort Mason in San Francisco to muster out of the army in time to be home for Christmas. He was released from the army in late 1945 after participating in most of the island campaigns under General MacArthur. So, my half-brother and your father were at the same post at the same time.

My maternal grandfather was living in an orphanage in California. He joined the Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater. He passed away this past October. My Paternal grandfather was a newspaper publisher who also loved flying. When the war started he flew patrols over the Gulf of Mexico as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He died December 31st, 1969 barely a month after I was born. Thank you for honoring your forebearers and remembering their sacrifices.

On my dad's side, he was 4 at the time of Pearl Harbor. My grandmother was a single parent raising 5 kids. My dad's older brother served in Germany 3 years later.

My mom was still 3 years from being born. My maternal grandparents were raising 9 girls and 2 boys- none were of fighting age yet.

That said- many thanks to the men and women who put on the uniform of the greatest country on Earth. we wouldn't be who we are without their sacrifices.

My Grandfather, who I was named after, joined the navy a few weeks after Pearl Harbor. My father was born 2 weeks prior to the attack. My grandfather came home from the war and became a firefighter, and was killed here in his hometown in 1950.

I have a newspaper article too I can share!!
