We dont have much money at the moment so my mom thought it would be a good idea to go on a vacation in place of christmas. We will still celebrate christmas in the tradition of our christmas dinner and being together but instead of exchanging gifts we save our money and put it toward a vacation. I see this as unfair main reason being my dad and nephew would not be able to go with us on this vacation so it would only be my mom and me and my sisters, not the entire family so not only would they get left out by everyone else giftwise they also would get left out of the "family vacation". Another reason being is I already placed everyones gifts under the tree so while they all get gifts and a vacation I wont get anything and I wont have any money to spend it on a vacation because I spent what little money I myself had on christmas gifts for them. I know this is the christmas season and alot of people have it worse than me so please no preaching. I just want opinions about the idea.

For clarification ... I have already bought gifts my family knows this they are under the tree... My parents have money but not enough this year to buy us gifts AND ALSO do a vacation so we have to decide which one we want to do... Were not going anywhere On christmas it would be After christmas, and were not flying were driving to a beach I have been to at least a thousand times over and were staying at our condo. I am just having trouble deciding because I see it as unfair because my mom and my sisters would get gifts (since mine are already bought) and a vacation My dad and nephew would only get a gift from me (since mine is already bought) and they would also miss out on the vacation. And I wouldnt have any fun on the vacation if I even got to go because what little money I did get to set aside I spent it on gifts. At the same time I was in a bad wreck so I have been house bound for 6 months and wouldnt mind the escape. But I would feel guilty since I view it as unfair as stated

We dont celebrate jesus or religion. Its mainly a tradition we have. We watch movies about santa we exchange gifts we eat we play games. Im just on the fence about if I want to exchange gifts or go on a vacation because I have already bought gifts and not everyone can go on the vacation so I see it as unfair .. while at the same time I have not seen the outside of these house walls in 6 months .. not even to goto the store I had to shop online for christmas gifts so a vacation out of here would be nice because I could get away from my everyday and im able to get around now and enjoy life. So if I pick stay here then everything is fair and the old tradition stays but Im still stuck here for I dont know how long until the next vacation ... but if I take the vacation, christmas will be sucky because I'll be watching everyone open gifts but I wont get anything to open and share in the tradition and then the vacation wont even be with my whole family so THAT will be sucky. Im on the fence..

It's really up to you and how you feel. It doesn't matter what other people think or "preach" to you about. Some people like to go on vacation at Christmas because if you fly out on Christmas day to a resort area, your plane fares are usually cheaper than on other days (right before Christmas).
It sounds like you want to be with your dad and nephew at Christmas too and would prefer that to a vacation. I'm not sure if your parents are together or separated. Maybe you could celebrate Christmas on a different day with your father and nephew if you decide you do want to go on the vacation with your mother and sister.
It's great you did your shopping early and have already bought your presents. Maybe you should explain to your mom that you don't have any money left to spend while you are on your holiday.
Ultimately the decision depends on how you feel about going away at Christmas. There is no right or wrong answer. There's nothing wrong with going on vacation if that is what you want to do. If that's what you decide, celebrate Christmas with your dad on another day and enjoy your vacation with your mom..

I don't think it's fair you to leave anybody behind. Christmas is about family, being together, and giving. Stay home and spend the little money you have on a gift, any gift. It's the thought that counts. =)

If you can't go on the vacation for financial reasons, thank your mother for the wonderful idea, and let her know you are strapped, already bought presents, and have decided it would be in your best interst to stay home.
She will get over it.

i don't think it's a good idea... a vacation is only going to add to debt and whatnot... i'm not trying to preach, i'm just trying to tell you what i forsee from a been there, done that point of view... just stay home and try to enjoy the nice holiday and save the vacation for a time when you can actually really afford it...

you forgot the most important person...Jesus. Is he invited?
Christmas isnt about vacation, gifts, money...... its about "love, peace and joy".
Christmas is all about Jesus. If you dont celebrate Jesus or religion.... Christmas obviously doesnt mean anything to you expect for worldly pleasures. Pity you.

I don't have much money but isn't a vacation going to cost money? Couldn't you spend what money you were going to spend on vacation on a few presents (they don't have to cost much) and a dinner?

Why don't you just buy gifts for the ppl who can't go on vaca, and the rest of family can go on the vaca?? Tis the season of giving not receiving anyway.
